Political Expert, Texan, Featured at SLA's 92nd Annual Conference in San Antonio

Molly Ivins, a syndicated columnist for the Forth Worth, (Texas) Star-Telegram and an expert on everything Texas will be the featured speaker at the Special Libraries Association's (SLA) 92nd Annual Conference to be held June 9-14, 2001 in San Antonio, Texas USA. Ivins will address conference participants at the Opening General Session on Monday, June 11th at 9:00 AM, in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

Ivins shares her political passion and analysis about the Lone Star State, national politics and other happenings with a zesty spice of humor. She is the author of the best-selling book, Molly Ivins Can't Say That, Can She?, a collection of essays on politics and journalism. Her other books include: Nothin but Good times Ahead; You Gotta Dance with What Brung You: Politics in the Clinton Years; and Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush. Her freelance work has appeared in Esquire, The Atlantic, The Nation, Harper's, and TV Guide. In addition, Ivins provides occasional commentary for National Public Radio and NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

Pulitzer Prize-winning Humorist to Address Audience in San Antonio

SLA has confirmed that Pulitzer Prize winner, best-selling author, and featured speakers at SLA's 92nd Annual Conference, June 9-14, 2001 in San Antonio, Texas USA.

Barry will share his unique brand of humor with conference participants at the Closing General Session in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Wednesday, June 13th at 9:00 AM.

Well known for his candor and point of view, Barry won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary. Barry has also written several best-sellers, including Dave Barry in Cyberspace; Dave Barry Talks Back: Dave Barry is from Mars and Venus; Big Trouble; and Dave Barry is not Taking this Sitting Down. The CBS television series Dave's World was based on two of his books.

SLA and Dialog Announce Major Partnership for San Antonio

Dialog, a division of Thomson Corporation, will serve as a Major Conference Partner for the Special Libraries Association's (SLA) 92nd Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas, USA, June 9-14, 2001. Dialog is one of three Major Conference Partners with SLA this year.

As a 2001 Major Conference Partner, Dialog has pledged support for specific conference activities and events, such as: the new Tech Zone Computer Lab, which will offer hands-on technology skills training necessary for today's information professionals to deliver quality services to their customers; the Management Development Institute (MDI), a unique, multi-day learning experience, which will take place concurrently with the 2001 Annual Conference; continuing education courses, providing conference participants with an opportunity for in-depth investigation of, and education on, issues of importance to their individual practice; and the SLA Board of Directors Meeting.

Fully-Integrated Library/Museum Facility in New Zealand

Puke Ariki, a fully-integrated library and museum, has started construction in New Plymouth, New Zealand. Situated next to the foreshore of New Plymouth ­ the largest city in the region of Taranaki, on the west cost of New Zealand's North Island ­ Puke Ariki will merge the New Plymouth Library and the Taranaki Museum into a single heritage and information facility.

Future plans include using the Internet so that Puke Ariki can become a doorway to Taranaki and New Zealand for people who live in other countries. One of the features of Puke Ariki will be a resource Taranaki Research Center, which will bring together the library's prestigious New Zealand reference collection with the 500 meters of historic archives and thousands of images held by the museum. Puke Ariki will also provide integrated education programs, a discovery center in the children and young person's area, a Gallery of Taranaki Life, and a new Taonga Maori (Maori treasures) gallery.
