2002 Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship Recipient Announced

SLA's Southern California Chapter has announced Natalie Joy Kamper, a master's degree candidate from the UCLA Graduate School of Information Studies, as the winner of the 2002 Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship. Kamper, who was chosen from 17 applicants, received a $3,000 award at the chapter's 75th Anniversary Party at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on April 18.

Kamper earned a B.S. in Kinesiology at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and expects to graduate from UCLA's Information Studies program in June 2002. She has completed internships at the RAND Library in Santa Monica and the USC Norris Medical Library and is the 2001-2002 co-president of the UCLA SLA student chapter. Her special librarianship areas of interest are information technology, medical and health information and corporate libraries.

Though the chapter said there were many strong applicants for this year's award, the Scholarship Committee believes Kemper possesses what is needed in future leaders: scholastic attainment; strong recommendations from academics and practitioners; and focused, goal-oriented plans.

The Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship was established by the Southern California Chapter of SLA to provide assistance to a future librarian enrolled in a graduate master's degree program in library and information studies. Karen Sternheim, an employee of the UCLA Management Library from 1980-1993, was extremely involved in the Special Libraries Association and was an active member of the Scholarship Committee. She had a special affinity for students entering the profession and was active in the UCLA Special Libraries Association student group. Sternheim also participated in the UCLA Library mentoring project and supervised information science graduate interns employed by UCLA's Management Library.
