Scholarships Available from SLA
SLA is now accepting applications for its 2002-2003 scholarships program. Applications must be postmarked by October 31, 2002. All scholarship winners will be determined by the SLA Scholarship Committee and approved by the SLA Board of Directors.
Each year, SLA awards more than $30,000 in scholarships for professional development and graduate study at accredited schools of library and information science. Each scholarship is awarded through criteria based on applications, transcripts and personal interviews with SLA members.
Awards will be announced in May 2003, and will be officially recognized at the SLA 94th Annual Conference in New York, New York. Available scholarships include:
· The SLA Scholarship will be granted only for graduate study in librarianship leading to a master's degree at a recognized school of library or information science. Up to three $6,000 SLA Scholarships are available each year. Applicants must possess, or be preparing to receive, a bachelor's degree with an interest in special librarianship.
· Mary Adeline Conner Professional Development Scholarship will be granted for post-MLS certificate or degree programs in any subject area, technological skill or managerial expertise relevant to the applicant's career goals in special librarianship. One $6,000 scholarship is available each year. Applicants must be members of SLA, possess a Master's Degree in Library Science and have five years of working experience in special libraries.
· SLA Affirmative Action Scholarship will be granted only for graduate study in librarianship leading to a master's degree at a recognized school of library or information science. One $6,000 Affirmative Action Scholarship is available each year. Applicants must be a member of a minority group, defined by the government as Black, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, American Indian or Alaskan Native.
· Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Scholarship will be granted for beginning graduate study leading to a doctoral degree from a recognized program in library science, information science or related fields of study. One $1,000 ISI Scholarship is available each year. Applicants must be members of SLA and have five years of working experience in special libraries.
· Plenum Scholarship will be granted for graduate study leading to a doctoral degree from a recognized program in library science, information science or related fields of study. One $1,000 Plenum Scholarship is available each year. Applicants must be members of SLA and have working experience in a special library.
Awards and Honors Program Accepting Nominations
Applications are now being accepted for SLA's 2002-2003 Awards and Honors Program. All nominations must be postmarked by December 6, 2002, with the exception of International Special Librarians Day Award (May 08, 2003).
Award winners will be determined by select committees and approved by SLA's Board of Directors at the SLA Winter Meeting in New Orleans, La., January 23-26, 2003. The winners will be announced after the Winter Meeting and officially recognized at SLA's 94th Annual Conference in New York, NY, June 7-12, 2003.
SLA units and individual members are encouraged to submit nominations. All SLA members in good standing may be nominated for an award (exceptions: Professional Award, Honorary Member and Media Awards). Individuals may be nominated by any member(s) of the association (including self-nominations) or by an employer or colleague. Nominations for the H.W. Wilson Company Award are selected by the H.W. Wilson Committee and are based on articles published in Information Outlook® during the 2002 publication year. The Factiva 21st Century Competencies in Action Award requires a separate application. All SLA Awards nominations should be sent directly to the Public Communications Department at SLA Headquarters.
