Welcome to Conference Connections, your source for current information on SLA's Annual Conference.

A Message from Janice R. Lachance

I am sorry to report that former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who had committed to delivering the Closing General Session keynote address at SLA 2005, has had to cancel his plans. This was a major opportunity for SLA, and I know we were all looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately, he has had to clear his schedule for the week of June 5 to work on tsunami relief efforts. As you know, the situation in southern Asia has worsened with the most recent earthquake.

The staff and I are terribly disappointed by this news. However, we have been deeply encouraged by our friends at Factiva, who were planning to support President Clinton’s address in Toronto. Upon hearing of the cancellation, Factiva immediately expressed support for another high-profile speaker for Toronto. As a result, I am pleased to
announce we have signed Gary Hamel, considered one of the most important management thinkers in the world, to address our Closing General Session on June 8. Hamel is the author of Leading the Revolution and other groundbreaking strategic management books. In the most recent Global Ranking of Business Thinkers, Hamel was rated #4 – higher than such notables as Bill Gates, Stephen Covey, and Jack Welch. Hamel is an expert on innovation and has been called “the world’s most profound business thinker.”

We continue to be grateful to our colleagues at Factiva, whose generosity and unwavering support of the profession was making President Clinton’s appearance possible and which will bring Gary Hamel to our conference.

Thank you, too, for all of your enthusiastic and supportive messages over the last few weeks. Your outpouring of support and excitement clearly indicates that we are doing the right thing by adding such a well-known speaker to the annual conference schedule.

Now, let’s get ready to celebrate in Toronto!
