SLA units that choose to utilize web space on the SLA Web server must adhere to the following guidelines listed below. The policies may be changed in the future as we move toward the standardization of the unit website policies and procedures regardless of the host. In addition, the Internal Revenue Service is looking to issue standards and regulations pertaining to all web-derived income such as sponsorships and advertising. Adequate notice will certainly be given to the unit leaders.

  1. Units may only sell advertising space or links in their electronic bulletin or journal section of their web site only if they have discontinued the paper version as the main method of distribution of that product. With the change from print to electronic, units will be able to continue to receive advertising revenues that were obtained with the print version. Units that provide both versions of their bulletin or journal may not explicitly sell advertising space or links for their web site. These units can include links to sites and advertisements but they should not charge to do so. Since this service is provided free of charge to the units, the unit web page should be used as a promotional and informational tool instead of a money-making tool.

  2. Links to other sites should be established in a manner that does not misrepresent the linked site. Descriptive links should not be false or misleading. For example, a linked titled "Bulletin Sponsors" should link to a list of actual bulletin sponsors instead of a list of potential bulletin sponsors.

  3. Copyrighted materials should not be posted on a web site without the permission of the copyright holder(s) and a reprint credit line.

  4. Maintenance of a units web site is the responsibility of the unit.

  5. Use of any cgi script/program or Front Page extensions (FPE) must be approved by the SLA Webmaster prior to it being placed on the Web page. The SLA Webmaster will review the cgi script program or FPE to determine its system resource requirements and to ensure SLA's Internet server resources are not exceeded. Once the cgi script is approved, it will be placed in the main cgi/bin directory by the SLA Webmaster for processing by the units web page.

  6. Any items posted to a units web site which have not been approved by SLA or the unit will be removed from the web site.

  7. All unit web pages must have a disclaimer statement.
