This onsite course covers issues in managing the use of copyright-protected materials.  Topics covered include:

  • the meaning of "managing" the use of copyright-protected materials

  • the role of copyright collectives (such as the Copyright Clearance Center)

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will understand the necessity of managing the use of copyright-protected materials and how to manage these materials.  The participant will be able to analyze the copyright risk in a given situation, learn how to avoid copyright infringement lawsuits, and what to do if your enterprise is accused of copyright infringement.  The participant will understand the steps in obtaining copyright permissions for print and digital works, and the importance of a written permissions procedure, and how to deal with unlocatable copyright owners.  The participant will be able to describe and discuss the role of agreements with collective such as the Copyright Clearance Center, and with digital publishers and vendors, plan license agreement negotiations, and explain licenses, and understand how to monitor legal and illegal uses of copyright-protected works, including digital works.

Specific Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the meaning of "managing" copyright materials.
  2. Name ways to avoid a copyright infringement law suit.
  3. Analyze copyright risk management in a given situation.
  4. Describe how to obtain copyright permissions.
  5. Explain how to deal with unlocatable copyright owners.
  6. Develop an outline for a copyright permissions procedure.
  7. Explain the role of copyright collectives such as the Copyright Clearance Center and Access Copyright.
  8. Discuss the role of digital licenses.
  9. Plan license agreement negotiations
  10. Analyze key terms and conditions in a digital license.
  11. Explain how to deal with an accusation of copyright infringement.
  12. Describe how to monitor legal and illegal uses of copyright-protected works including digital ones.

Performance Measure

Course assessment, exercises and discussions will measure and evaluate the degree of understanding that participants achieve during the learning process.

Attendance is required for the entire day-long session to obtain IACET credit and/or satisfy certificate requirements.

Prerequisites

This onsite course is one of seven required courses for SLA's Click University Certificate in Copyright Management:  Principles and Issues. CCM 100, CCM200 and/or 201, CCM300, CCM400 and CCM500 are recommended, but are not required, to be taken before this course; however, participation in this course requires a knowledge of basic copyright management principles and issues (including fair use/dealing).

There are no prerequisites for non-certificate participants, who may take any certificate course(s) à la carte.  However, participation in this course requires a basic knowledge of copyright management issues and principles (including fair use/dealing).
