This course establishes the connection between knowledge services and strategic learning, identifying how informal and formal training, learning and knowledge-sharing activities influence the successful achievement of enterprise success for the larger organization. Based on Guy St. Clair's book, Beyond degrees: professional learning for knowledge services (München: K.G. Saur, 2003). Topics covered include:

  • history of strategic learning
  • the role of knowledge services in the parent organization
  • the value of strategic learning in the knowledge transfer process
  • the learning audit and expectation management

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will recognize basic theoretical and practical concepts about strategic learning and their connection with knowledge management and knowledge services. Participants will be able to identify and summarize definitions, descriptions and various applications for strategic learning. Participants will also identify service delivery models and scenarios for managing strategic learning in the knowledge management/knowledge services environment and demonstrate organizational awareness of knowledge learning/knowledge sharing, the new paradigm for professional learning.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the distinctions between generalized training and strategic learning for workplace application
  2. Establish the workplace as both a learning organization and a teaching organization
  3. Identify elements of exceptional strategic learning delivery and their application in the workplace
  4. Determine goals and designing metrics for strategic learning

At the conclusion of the course, participants will design an action plan for developing and implementing a customized strategic learning program for the parent organization (or a specific element of such a program). Using learning outcomes from the course and based on their understanding of the current or potential role of strategic learning in their parent organizations, the exercise will enable participants to return to the workplace with a product that can be used to enhance knowledge managment/knowledge services delivery in their area of responsibility.

Performance Measure

Course assessment, exercises and discussions will measure and evaluate the degree of understanding that participants achieve over the learning process.

Prerequisites

While the primary goal in developing these programs is to allow SLA members to earn one or more certificates, each of these courses has inherent value and any course may be taken à la carte. KMSKS01 is recommended but not required.

People are Saying:

"The action plan forced me to plan incrementally and create something truly workable. Some KM classes just have you develop a "pie in the sky" plan."

"Guy is a terrific knowledge source, and has a conversational delivery that works well in this setting."
