This course provides techniques and guidelines for understanding and utilizing the knowledge audit, the evaluation tool which combines the methodologies of the standard needs analysis (asking what research resources and services people require to do their work) and the information audit (how research resources and services are produced or acquired and how these resources are actually used) to establish and evaluate knowledge assets for the larger parent organization. Topics covered include:
- distinctions between the needs analysis and the knowledge audit
- matching organization knowledge strategy with service delivery goals
- the Henczel seven-stage audit model
- determining scope and resource allocations for conducting the knowledge audit
Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will recognize the role of knowledge in the larger organization and acquire methodologies for communicating knowledge strategy and achieving buy-in from critical stakeholders. Participants will also determine appropriate data collection and communication models for the specific organizational need and formulate analysis and evaluation methodologies.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
- Establish the value of the knowledge audit and raising awareness about its role in organizational success
- Determine the scope and range of the audit
- Choose an audit methodology, communication strategy, and data collection and analysis framework
- Deal with findings that do not match preconceptions about outcome
At the conclusion of the course, participants will design an action plan for implementing a specific service enhancement for the parent organization. Using learning outcomes from the course and based on their understanding of the current or potential value of the knowledge audit to their parent organization, the exercise will enable participants to return to the knowledge management/knowledge services workplace with a product that can serve as a foundation for a knowledge audit.
Performance Measure
Course assessment, exercises and discussions will measure and evaluate the degree of understanding that participants achieve over the learning process.
