This course identifies techniques for establishing the relationship between the management of knowledge services and organizational leadership. The critical result is the development and on-going implementation of an enterprise-wide knowledge culture. With knowledge services as a recognized operational function, knowledge development and knowledge sharing combine into a single organizational attribute supporting the successful achievement of the organizational mission. Based on Guy St. Clair's books Entrepreneurial librarianship: the key to effective information services management, by Guy St. Clair (London and New York: Bowker-Saur, 1996) and Power and influence: enhancing information services within the organization, (London and New Brunswick, NJ: Bowker-Saur, 1994). Topics covered include:
- definitions of leadership as used in organizational management
- the entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial perspective in knowledge management/knowledge services delivery
- shifting paradigms with respect to knowledge transfer in the larger organization
- the value of power and influence in the success of knowledge services delivery
- defined elements of the knowledge culture
Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will describe knowledge services as a management and service delivery methodology. Participants will also identify the connections between excellence in knowledge services delivery and organizational leadership, and they will distinguish the identification and use of leadership competencies: passion, strength, ability. Participants will document the increasingly holistic role of knowledge services in mission-critical success and demonstrate the management partnership and the role of key leaders and collaborators in framing an enterprise-wide knowledge culture.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
- Establish connection between knowledge services and organizational leadership
- Enhance knowledge services delivery throughout the organization
- Raise awareness about the relationship between knowledge management/knowledge services delivery and organizational success
- Identify "real-world" leadership applications
- Identify, develop, and obtain the support of advocates, champions, and sponsors
At the conclusion of the course, participants will design an action plan for developing a personalized leadership agenda for identifying and establishing a formal connection between the work of their area of responsibility and organizational leadership. Using learning outcomes from the course and based on their understanding of the current or potential planning environment in the parent organization, the exercise will enable participants to return to the workplace with a product that can be used to influence champions and advocates for service delivery and at the same time help them obtain commitment from organizational leaders to serve as sponsors for successful knowledge management/knowledge services initiatives.
Performance Measure
Course assessment, exercises and discussions will measure and evaluate the degree of understanding that participants achieve over the learning process.
