This course describes the role of knowledge management and knowledge services in developing and managing enterprise-wide content dispersed throughout the organization. Particular emphasis is given to identifying and developing relationships throughout the enterprise as knowledge workers--especially management staff--seek to characterize the functional unit as the organizational knowledge nexus or "hub," thus enhancing the role of the unit in the larger enterprise while providing a "one-stop shop" service delivery for all organizational employees and units. Topics covered include:

  • ECM and organizational roles with respect to ECM service delivery
  • an overview of standard tools, techniques, and strategies for ECM
  • definitions for structured and unstructured content
  • the operational function for the department or unit responsible for the transfer of information, knowledge, and/or strategic learning (such as a specialized library, knowledge services center, or similar unit) in providing service delivery for the entire organization
  • collaboration methodologies for working with other operational functions that also manage information, knowledge, and strategic learning

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will classify ECM needsin the specific workplace context and identify evaluation solutions (technical and non-technical) for meeting organizational needs. Participants will also recognize the role of the operational unit in the larger enterprise and summarize "big picture" benefits of an established and functioning ECM solution.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify others in the organization who are dealing with ECM-related issues
  2. Establish the organizational/operational costs for ignoring or doing without an ECM solution
  3. Establish an awareness-raising campaign for drawing attention to what is being lost
  4. Provide guidance for strengthening the relationship between technology and organizational knowledge
  5. Establish professional information staff as knowledge "thought leaders" in the enterprise

At the conclusion of the course, participants will design an action plan for conducting a survey of ECM needs and the potential for enterprise-wide management of structured and unstructured content. Using learning outcomes from the course and based on their understanding of the current or potential knowledge management/knowledge services environment in the parent organization, the exercise will enable participants to return to the workplace with a product for providing influence in the larger organization and the development of a knowledge management/knowledge services solution as ECM issues are put forward.

Performance Measure

Course assessment, exercises and discussions will measure and evaluate the degree of understanding that participants achieve over the learning process.
