Recognizing that technology is the tool that enables KM, this course provides attendees with a critical framework for assessing the role of technology, focusing on application services, smart tools, organizational data management, and similar solutions while at the same time identifying issues that relate to the management of intellectual capital from the non-technical and interpersonal perspective. Topics covered include:
- cross-functional team management and success in the larger organization
- building successful relationships with IT professionals
- the new movement to software-as-a-service for knowledge management/knowledge services provision
- standards for knowledge management/knowledge services products and tools
Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will identify and summarize the evolving relationship between knowledge and technology. Participants will determine leadership perceptions about knowledge management, knowledge services, and information technology. Participants will also relate the role of the external application service provider and the impact on enterprise-wide IT delivery. Participants will consider managing service provision for both users seeking traditional support for information management, knowledge management, and strategic learning and those identified as digital natives.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
- Establish relationships with different operational units sharing similar access and "new tools" problems
- Survey users to determine their level of expertise in different platforms and using varying levels of sophistication in their work
- Create knowledge management/knowledge services planning groups to strengthen cross-functional training and knowledge sharing
- Measure the impact of application innovations in workplace performance
At the conclusion of the course, participants will design an action plan for giving attention to an IT/knowledge management issue in their parent organization. Using learning outcomes from the course and based on their understanding of the current or potential knowledge development/knowledge sharing environment in the parent organization, the exercise will enable participants to return to the workplace with a product they can use to address their specific situation.
Performance Measure
Course assessment, exercises and discussions will measure and evaluate the degree of understanding that participants achieve over the learning process.
