This course matches the basics of generic project management to organizational KM requirements with attention to the overall process including goal definition, planning the work required to achieve the goal, oversight of the total project and the role of support teams, monitoring and measurement, and, as required, bringing the project to closure when completed or truncated. Topics covered include:
- an overview of standard tools, techniques, and strategies for project management
- project scope determination
- project impact on knowledge management/knowledge services delivery in the workplace
- resource identification and the development and utilization of support teams
- the one-time focus (as opposed to "on-going" projects)
- the role of the project manager and his/her relationship to the knowledge transfer process
Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will identify the reasoning behind the project--why are we doing this? Participants will consider value judgment: the importance of completing the project on time, on (or under) budget, and at the agreed-upon quality. Participants will also discuss the triple constraints of project management and how they are applied in the knowledge management/knowledge services project scenario and Wagner's orientation trilogy: task, management, leadership. Participants will determine value enhancement through successful project management.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
- Identify project participants
- Estimate costs and time requirements for providing deliverables
- Organize the work, analyze results, and track and report progress
- Determine and communicate end-game results
At the conclusion of the course, participants will design an action plan for managing a project relating to a specific situation with respect to knowledge management/knowledge services delivery in their parent organization. Using learning outcomes from the course and based on their understanding of the current or potential project environment, the exercise will enable participants to return to the workplace with a product that can be incorporated into their work in their area of responsibility.
Performance Measure
Course assessment, exercises and discussions will measure and evaluate the degree of understanding that participants achieve over the learning process.
Prerequisites
