Description

Presented here is a taxonomic approach to indexing databases. Taxonomies, classifications, and thesauri are defined. Distinctions are made between filtering, indexing, meta data, and subject term assignment. Taxonomies can be expensive to build, to maintain, and to use. Tools are available to ease the pain. The basics of such tools are presented including the desired features and the benefits of use. Costs of building, of maintaining, and of deploying them are presented.
This presentation is strictly informative. Important functionality issues of taxonomy tools are presented, but no products are promoted. Toolmakers in this arena are referenced in a list. No evaluations of these tools are provided in this presentation.

Guarantee
The audience will know what tools are available to build, to maintain, and to deploy taxonomies. Audience members will understand what a taxonomic knowledge domain is, and is not, and why they are important. Audiences will understand the costs involved. The level of knowledge is for beginners to intermediates.   This presentation will be useful for those charged with finding cost effective and efficient ways of indexing text intensive databases. This presentation is NOT about data mining or text mining techniques.
