Using ebrary

Using the ebrary system is simple:

  • Do a simple or advanced search
  • Select a book of interest
  • Read the book in full-text
  • Navigate throughout the book using the ebrary Reader
  • Use InfoTools to expand your research
  • Save and manage research on your Personal Bookshelf

Searching

ebrary offers two search options, simple and advanced, e.g. searching by subject, author, title, etc., and supports Boolean searching and proximity operators -- check under "Searching" in ebrary Help & Support for the specifics.

You can also browse and view the collection by subject.  The subjects are listed per Library of Congress (LOC) classifications and are in alphabetical order within subject.

ebrary's NEW User Interface (UI)

As part of the new UI, ebrary offers a number of new options for viewing content.

ebrary QuickView® - instantly view documents in many of the leading web browsers and even an iPhone. No software downloads or installations are needed and QuickView can be used in conjunction with the ebrary Plug-in Reader® or ebrary Unity Reader®.

End-users may prefer to use QuickView to peruse a document, then launch the Unity or Plug-in Readers to print, copy text, highlight, use ebrary InfoTools® and more.  A comparison of the different Readers is available in the NEW User Interface (UI) factsheet.

If you have not yet reviewed the new UI, we encourage you to view the self-paced video:

User Guides (PDF):

Additionally, ebrary offers live, web-based training. The training program includes the following modules:

  • End-user with the ebrary Plug-in Reader and QuickView
  • End-user with the ebrary Unity Reader (Java-based) and QuickView
  • End-user with both the ebrary Plug-in and Unity Readers with QuickView

ebrary Reader

The ebrary Reader is a software application that works within your Web browser for Windows and Mac OS.  With the ebrary Reader, while viewing a book and not loosing your place you can browse and navigate through the book, copy text, print pages, search within a book, search across all of the books, view definitions of words, access related maps, view biographic information by name, access encyclopedia entries for a word or phrase, and translate text.

The ebrary Reader is easy to install; simply follow the instructions under the "Getting Started" section of ebrary  "Help."  The "Help" tab is located at the top of the left navigation bar in the LM Library.

If you run into difficulty installing the reader please check with your IT Department to make sure security settings are not affecting the installation process.
