Seminar Description
In difficult economic times, we frequently hear about special library closures or reductions. Recently, however, the pace of these cutbacks seems to be increasing, fueled by the erratic economy, unprecedented corporate bankruptcies, mergers and acquisitions, and, in the case of government agency libraries, by calls for reduction in the cost and complexity of government.
Using case studies, these two sessions will explore how organizations cutting back or closing their libraries plan to meet their information needs going forward. We will try to answer the question: do these organizations realize they need librarians even if they don't need a library? We'll discuss specific survival skills for librarians, including alternate sourcing and scenario planning. We'll also cover the need for information service managers to align with and become thought leaders in the parent organization, skills on which their survival may depend.
Who Should Attend?
Information professionals who want to survive and succeed in their organizations.
Critical Learning Questions
- What is the role of the company library in a complex organization?
- How do you align the work of the library and librarians to help meet organizational goals?
- How do you understand and assess the information needs of your customers?
- How do you recognize the need to adapt or be marginalized?
