SESSION I
Patents 101 - a Basic Primer to Patent Information

Description

This two-part series presents a basic primer covering the various terms and concepts of patents and the processes involved in working with patents.

This session is aimed at information workers who are either new to patents or have worked with patent information and need more information on why patent attorneys ask such strange questions.

The material will help you prepare to talk to your staff and other patent professionals and attorneys about patents, understand the various terms and concepts of patents, and understand how this all comes together. Topics include patents and why they are important, why companies get patents in the first place, concepts and buzzwords to know, and why the requesters are always in such a hurry. Coverage will focus on patents but their relationship with other areas of intellectual property will be covered, as well. The patent process will be discussed in relationship to international filing practices, timing, and treaties. The goal is to prepare people who work with patents, search patents, or deal with inventors and patent attorneys, and for participants to be able to understand the rudiments of intellectual property and to focus on finding the correct results for the requester.

Critical Learning Questions:

  • Why would anyone want to know the exact day when we received a twentyyear old document?
  • What's the hurry for this information?
  • What is a 102 and why do I care?
  • What is the difference between an application date, a priority date, a publication date and an issue date and what do all the numbers associated with these dates mean?

Who Should Attend:
Librarians, patent searchers, paralegals, patent agents, newlyminted patent attorneys (things they don't teach you in law school), and inventors

SESSION II
Patents 102 - A Basic Primer to Patent Information II

Date: 27 October 2010
Time: 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. ET

Description
This session is a continuation of Patents 101 and is aimed at more technical topics, including advanced information that researchers should know about patents. More acronyms and abbreviations will be covered as these come up in conversations and requests quite often, and workers are expected to know what they mean. Different forms and dates, deadlines and types of patents will be covered, along with more detail on the different types of intellectual property and how they relate to patents. Various numbers will be covered in depth, including what they mean and how they are related to each other and how one can be used to find another. The relationship of various sections of patent law and how they relate to patent research will also be discussed.

Critical Learning Questions:

  • What is meant by a provisional application and how does it relate to a patent?
  • I have a patent number but it doesn't look like any other patent numbers I can find; what do I do?
  • What is the priority date and what does it mean to push it back?
  • What do 35 U.S.C., 37 CFR and MPEP mean, and how do they relate to patent information?

Who Should Attend:
Librarians, patent searchers, paralegals, patent agents, newlyminted patent attorneys (things they don't teach you in law school), and inventors
