Seminar Description
SLA and Click U are again offering free online sessions to help you learn about virtual worlds (such as Second Life) and to help you get ready to participate in SLA Second Life events with members from around the world. This training is offered in two parts. Part 1 is delivered virtually through WebEx. Part 2 takes place in-world in Second Life. If you've never used Second Life before, be sure to take Part 1 before taking Part 2.
Introduction to Second Life Part 1: Curious as to what Second Life is all about? Want to know how you can get started? Want to find out more about what SLA is up to in this 3D virtual world? In Part 1, you'll learn about virtual worlds and SLA initiatives in virtual worlds. You'll also get the detail you need to get started using Second Life.

Introduction to Second Life Part 2
This session will take place in Second Life and will require that you get your Second Life avatar (www.secondlife.com). This is an in-world workshop to help you get up to speed on how to use the Second Life environment. We will take a look at the SLA space in Second Life and will discuss how to make friends, teleporting a person, creating a home location and landmark, camera controls, taking snapshots and profiles.

Cindy Hill (Sydney Delphin in Second Life) is a Fellow and past president of SLA and a longtime and active member of the San Andreas and San Francisco chapters. She currently serves as the Chair for the SLA Virtual Worlds Council, advising the Board on the potential of virtual worlds in learning, collaboration and networking for its members. Cindy is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on the information profession, innovation, the impact of technology and its potential, trends and issues, and leadership and management topics. Cindy has worked as an information professional in a variety of industries including environmental, engineering consulting, and executive recruiting and high-technology. Cindy's two most recent positions include Vice President of Outsell's Information Management Service and prior to that, leading Sun's Digital Libraries & Research team. She has her own consulting firm, Hill Information Consulting Group. She enjoys exploring the potential of new and emerging technologies to connect people, content, and knowledge. |

Scott Brown (Steven Source in Second Life) is Owner of Social Information Group, an independent information practice dedicated to helping individuals and organizations effectively use social networking tools for information sharing and networking. For the previous nine years, he was a Senior Information Specialist with Digital Libraries & Research, the library and information organization at Sun Microsystems. He has provided training in Second Life and in Real Life to Sun employees and other firms to help them get started in virtual worlds. He is a member of the SLA Virtual Worlds Council, Past Chair of the Competitive Intelligence Division, and a past President of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of SLA. He received his MLIS from San Jose State University in 1999. |

Christy Confetti-Higgins (Violet Portola in Second Life) has been a part of Sun Microsystems' global Digital Libraries & Research team for 12 years. She is passionate about working with people to get the information and connections they need to get their jobs done. She manages content evaluation, selection and deployment by creating strategic relationships with Sun's content partners and key Sun groups. She manages search and information discovery across key purchased and internal content and has integrated content into Sun's portals, wikis, blogs, social networks, virtual worlds, and microblogs. Christy also manages the group's communications and awareness channels, ensuring Sun employees are knowledgeable about the information services. Christy is an active member of SLA and the Rocky Mountain Chapter, lives in Colorado, and loves to bike, ski and spend time with her family. |
