Goldspiel 1995 The Impact of Electronic Publishing on Special Libraries - 1995 Goldspiel Grant

The 1995 Steven I. Goldspiel Research Grant was awarded to Dr. Carol Tenopir and Donald W. King for their project: "The Impact of Electronic Publishing on Special Libraries." The principal goal of the study was to gather and analyze data which could be used by members of the information profession, in particular focusing on special librarians, to identify and appraise the current and future effects electronic publishing will have on their organizations. The study findings will assist special librarians in providing enhanced access to the journal literature for users, and in projections and budget decisions on collection development, use of electronic publications and relevant resource allocation. The study also addresses questions on how traditional information search and retrieval has been affected by electronic publishing as well as the effect of electronic publishing on copyright issues. Finally, analysis of data on journal readership from 4,000 survey responses provides detailed information about the journal system. Data on cost, how journals are obtained, whether they are photocopied, and interlibrary lending trends reveals pertinent information regarding traditional journal and electronic journal use. Findings from this project are projected to be published as a manuscript entitled Toward Electronic Journals: Realities for Scientists, Librarians and Publishers by SLA in January, 2000.
