Throughout the year, SLA's Professional Development Center (PDC) and our facilitators strive to present exceptional learning experiences. The success of these learning experiences are be due, in part, to help of student volunteers. They serve as the onsite "greeters" and "gatekeeper" to the learning experience. What are the upcoming opportunities?
Currently, PDC is seeking to fill student volunteer positions for SLA's 96th Annual Conference to be held in Toronto, ON Canada. We are specifically seeking volunteers who can cover our CE courses to be held on June 4 and 5, 2005. What are the duties of a Student Volunteer? As a student volunteer, you will assist in creating a positive learning environment. We ask that student volunteers arrive at least 45 minutes before the course to assist the facilitator. As participants enter the room, attendees receive a warm greeting by student volunteers and are given course handouts.
The student volunteers or "course greeters" provide trouble shooting support during SLA's CE (continuous education) courses by focusing on the following:
• Reporting audio visual problems to SLA staff
• Coordinating attendee check-in
• Securing extra copies of course materials
• Distributing documents/certificates of completion
• Collecting evaluation forms As the conference approaches, PDC may identify additional duties for the student volunteers.
In exchange for their help, students attend the course free of charge. This is a savings of more than $200! Who can serve as a Student Volunteer? This opportunity is available to all graduate students in accredited MLS programs regardless of their SLA membership status. Student volunteers must be available to attend the assigned course and participate in an onsite orientation which has been tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 3, 2005.
How would interested students notify PDC of their interest? We're glad that you're interested in serving as a student volunteer during SLA's 96th Annual Conference in Toronto! The next step is to contact SLA's Professional Development Center, at learning@sla.org or 1-703-647-4925, by May 2, 2004. We will make note of your interest and provide additional information to you as soon as possible.
Please note that students volunteer positions are not guaranteed and are assigned on an "as needed" basis. Thank you for your interest in and support of this program!
We look forward to learning with you in Toronto!
