The Triple Whammy: Change, Communication, and Conflict Presented by Molly L. Whalen
Today’s volunteer leadership must function together in an ever-changing partnership. Learning to communicate with different styles and preferences is key to a fully functioning leadership team. In this session participants consider change and how members and react to it, identify their predominate behavior style(s) and learn how this affects communication with others, and learn how both contribute to conflict. Techniques will be shared for how to work more effectively with those with different styles. Peter Senge’s “Ladder of Inference” will be used to illustrate the lenses we look through when communicating and making decisions. Creative team activities will help illustrate how to deal with different behavior styles and conflict styles as they show up within team projects.

Cracker Jack Membership Strategies and Volunteer Involvement Techniques   Presented by Jill McCrory
What is the “hidden surprise” that prospective members are looking for when they consider joining SLA? What “prize inside” are you promising your volunteers? In this session participants explore the five elements of membership development—prospecting, recruitment, orientation, involvement, and renewal. We will discuss why people join organizations, what the environment for volunteering is within your association and chapters, and how to delegate to volunteers. Participants will identify all the “hidden surprises” that chapters possess and match potential member types to these services. This process will allow participants to develop a clearer understanding of the variety of “surprises” that are necessary to keep members involved and coming back for more.
