This magnificent piece of art commemorates the first 100 years of SLA. From Bretton Woods, NH to Second Life and from quill pens to PDAs, our tools have changed and where we work has changed, but knowledge and networking have not. Experience SLA's past as you look to the future.
The 3-dimensional Centennial Showcase celebrating the 100th Anniversary of SLA is designed as an open book. For state of the art knowledge in 2009, the centerpiece is the image of a computer monitor featuring the SLA website and a digital frame within the "monitor" for member photos.
A bookmark containing flags of countries representing our members curves from the top binding of the book to the bottom while the story flows in a counterclockwise direction from the upper left side from 1909 with John Cotton Dana through 2008 featuring the Wall Street Journal ad "The right people, information and decisions," and on to the future. 3-D items include a bust of John Cotton Dana, actual card catalog drawer, microfiche, SLA Jefferson silver cup, iPod Nano and Blackberry PDA, and various pins, buttons and meeting ribbons.
On the upper right section is a list of Chapters, Divisions and Caucuses while on the left is a list of the Charter Members. We move from 1909 with John Cotton Dana through 2008 featuring newspaper clippings, telegrams from U.S. Presidents, SLA's serials and other publications, and on to the future with Second Life and Conference highlights DVDs.
A brass plaque at the bottom features a dedication message:
SLA / Celebrating 100 Years, 1909-2009
On behalf of those
who have built and sustained SLA for a century,
we dedicate this to

We have prepared some considerations supplementing your own local procedures to assist those interested in hosting the SLA 100th Anniversary Centennial Showcase. Hosts are expected to assume all responsibility for planning, managing and funding the costs associated with exhibiting the showcase, including all shipping, space, equipment, installation/de-installation, security, signage and insurance. SLA staff will provide quotations on shipping costs, arrange consultative assistance upon request.
The full exhibition contains:
- 1 showcase (52" x 36.5" x 8" @ 90lbs) in shipping crate (56" x 40" x 13" @ 70lbs)
- 1 display stand for the showcase in shipping crate (total 200 lbs)
It will take two people a maximum of 1 hour to set up and less to break down the exhibit. Check out the Centennial Showcase Assembly Instructions prior to starting assembly. There is a folder with these instructions and helpful assembly photos in the Display Stand Crate
