BYLAWS

  1. Suggestions for Chapter Bylaws

    1. Each chapter must write its own bylaws consistent with the Bylaws of the Association and with Association policies as established by the Board of Directors. The chapters must revise or amend their own bylaws according to any Association bylaws revisions or amendments. Model bylaws are provided upon request.

    2. The chapter bylaws and any subsequent revisions or amendments to the bylaws must be approved by the Association's Bylaws Committee before final adoption by the chapter membership. It is essential to submit them to the Committee at least six months prior to the chapter's next business meeting. Immediately after ratification by the members, send two copies of the complete text of the new edition of the Bylaws, signed and dated by the Chapter President, to the Bylaws Committee Chair for signature. The Bylaws Committee Chair will retain one copy and return the other to the Chapter. The Chapter President will immediately send copies to theChapter Cabinet Chair and to the Association's Membership Development Department for filing in the Association archives. The bylaws should state the purpose of the chapter in a scope note, and should be modeled after the Association's bylaws which are contained in Who's Who in Special Libraries.

  2. Procedures for Amending Chapter Bylaws

In January 1997, the SLA Bylaws Committee amended the 1983 procedures for amending the bylaws of Association units: The procedures are as follows:

    1. Send proposed Bylaws amendments to Association Bylaws Committee Chair for review and approval to prevent conflict with Association Bylaws.

    2. Bylaws must be approved by the Chapter's Board.

    3. Present Bylaws to chapter membership for approval in accordance with Chapter Bylaws.

    4. After membership approval, presiding officer must sign two originals of the complete text of the new edition of the Bylaws. Insert approval date under the heading of the first page.

    5. Send both copies of the signed complete text to the Association Bylaws Committee Chair with space for signature and date on the last page. One signed original will be returned to the Chapter.

    6. Retain original signed copy in the chapter archives.

    7. Copies showing both signatures should be sent by the Chapter President to:

      1. Association office
      2. Chapter Cabinet Chair
      3. Chapter Archives
