I. DEFINITION OF CHAPTERS

A. Relationship to Association

Participation in chapter activities is a most gratifying aspect of membership in SLA. The organization of chapters and their activities are carried on within the framework of the Association's bylaws and policies as determined by the Association's Board of Directors. The Association receives direct impetus in many of its professional activities from the work and support of the chapters. In turn, chapters receive the benefits of an international body that fosters inter-chapter cooperation and collectively promotes the advancement of special librarianship and information services.

The formal relationship between the chapters and the Special Libraries Association is stated in Articles V and VIII of the Association's bylaws (Bylaws are located in Who's Who in Special Libraries). Article V pertains to the functions and role played by chapter presidents and presidents-elect in the Chapter Cabinet. Article VIII relates specifically to chapters and defines the establishment, membership eligibility, bylaws, establishment of groups within the chapter organization, annual reports, funds, dissolution, and provisional chapters.

B. Relationship to Chapter Cabinet

The Chapter Cabinet consists of all SLA chapter presidents and president-elects. They represent chapter interests on all matters considered by the Board of Directors or acted upon by the Association staff and committees, and they keep the chapters informed of all decisions and policies affecting them. The Chapter Cabinet is headed by the Cabinet Chair and Chair-Elect, elected by the SLA membership to serve two year terms on the Board of Directors.

The Chapter Cabinet Chair presides at all meetings of the Chapter Cabinet, reminds presidents of deadlines, reviews annual reports, makes an annual report on chapter activities to the Board and membership, prepares agendas for Cabinet meetings at the Association's Annual Conferences and Winter Meetings, works with provisional chapters and new chapters, and reviews and suggests revisions to the Guidelines.

The Chair-Elect serves as secretary to all Cabinet meetings. Responsibilities include: providing a summary of SLA Board of Directors meetings and making a report to the Chapter Cabinet. Additionally, he/she coordinates President and President-Elect chapter visits, reviews the chapter's financial reports, and oversees the chapter's individual policies and guidelines.
