A Message from the Chief Executive Officer - Delegation
I am so glad to have seen so many of you in Reno at my fourth Leadership Summit. From the reviews we have received, it was one of the best yet. Many of you are starting your year leading your unit, and others are anticipating that position next year. Just remember that you are surrounded by a board and committees anxious to work with you. Keep in mind that president or chair is not a solo job and delegation is one of the most important management skills you must master. Good delegation saves you time, develops your fellow leaders, grooms a successor, and motivates. Poor delegation causes frustration, demotivates and confuses the other person, and fails to achieve the task or purpose itself. So it's a management skill that's worth improving. A simple delegation rule is the SMART acronym, or better still, SMARTER. It's a quick checklist for proper delegation. Delegated tasks must be:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Agreed
- Realistic
- Time bound
- Exciting or Enjoyable
- Recorded
"Exciting" or "enjoyable" may not be realistic for all delegated work; your job is to explain why the work is important and how it will yield a sense of purpose for the person who is responsible for the task. Have a great year designing and implementing great activities for our members.
--Janice R. Lachance, Chief Executive Officer
