A Message from the Chief Executive Officer - What?s in a Name?
SLA's Annual Conference is just a few weeks away and we will have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make many new ones. As a leader, many members will know your name. Will you know theirs? When we remember someone, we are telling him/her, "You are important." We may be sending just the opposite message when we forget a person's name.
I invite you to use LMER "glue" to remember names. LMER is an acronym for four simple steps which can teach you how to remember names and strengthen your memory by "sticking" the name into your long-term memory. These steps are:
Look and Listen--Look at the person. Get a strong mental image of the person. What characteristics make the person unique? Is the person large, small, tall, thin, lots of hair, no hair? Listen clearly to the name. Ask the person to repeat his/her name if you do not hear the name clearly.
Mind Picture--Associate the person's name with a picture that is easy to recall. The full name should create ONE picture. The person whose name you have made a picture of should be in the picture. Difficult names may need to be broken down into syllables to create memorable pictures. Example: Linda Broussard - Picture a pretty woman (LINDA is Spanish for pretty) who BREWS beer in her YARD.
Exaggerate--The more exaggerated and colorful the picture, the easier it will be to remember. Make the picture larger than life.
Repeat--Repeat the name silently to yourself a few times. Try to use the name in conversation. Introducing the person to others can be an easy way to repeat the name without drawing attention.
Who knows? You may impress someone whom you've just met so much that he/she will be anxious to work with you on a project, a committee or board because you have just shown them how important they are to you.
--Janice R. Lachance, Chief Executive Officer
Integrated Calendar Feature
Advertise your unit?s future programming! The integrated calendar feature is designed to allow unit webmasters to integrate the information located on the unit?s Web page to the Events Calendar located on the SLA Web site. The code is easy to install. For more information, click here. To set up this feature, please contact Natalie Gozzard, SLA?s Leadership Services Associate (+1.703.647.4937), to establish the primary contact for your unit. SLA is the combined strength of programs offered by international headquarters plus those offered by our chapters and divisions.
Centennial Celebration Framework Established
President Vargha has appointed a Centennial Commission to oversee SLA?s 100-year anniversary celebration. Does your unit have ideas to submit to the Commission? Additional information and a listing of SLA members serving on this Commission are in the press release distributed to web masters, list owners and public relations chairs this month. Submit your ideas to 100@sla.org.
Annual Conference
Have you registered for the SLA 2007 Annual Conference and Exposition to be held in Denver, CO, USA, 3-6 June 2007? Register by May 1 to maximize your membership benefits and save US$100 off the regular member registration amount.
The Leadership Development Institute will be on Sunday morning. Please invite all of the elected or appointed leaders attending conference to participate in this year?s programming and dialogue. A breakfast will be served at 7:30 AM and the Institute will begin at 8:15 AM. It?s a great place to find out what other chapters and divisions are doing and how each others? ideas can enrich your own. Bring examples of your bulletins, pages of your website, award programs, a successful program or any other ideas you would like to share with others.
Each chapter and division has two seats on their respective cabinets. The Chapter and Division Cabinet meetings will be Tuesday at 5:30 PM. These two seats are usually held by the president and president-elect for Chapter Cabinet and the chair and chair-elect for Division Cabinet. If neither is able to attend, the head of the unit may appoint another member of the unit as a delegate. Remember to pick up your cabinet ribbon at the Information Booth near registration.
While you are in Info Expo, visit the Idea Showcase where the best practices of SLA?s units will be featured.
And, finally, mark your conference planner to attend the SLA Salutes Awards & Leadership Reception at Coors Field following the Cabinet meetings on Tuesday.
If you would like a consultation session with SLA?s Chief Community Officer Linda Broussard during the conference, please send her a request and suggested time via e-mail in order to assist with planning. You may also contact her onsite at +1.571.201.2916 to schedule a meeting.
If you have any questions or comments about Leadership Connections, we would like your feedback. Please share your comments with leadership@sla.org and visit the Leadership Resource Center on the SLA website for information on Leadership.
