A Message from the Chief Executive Officer - Thank You
Giving a well deserved thank you is a key responsibility of leadership and a motivator to those who have contributed to the success of a project. So, on behalf of the SLA staff who worked with the hundreds of leaders representing the units planning the SLA 2008 Annual Conference & INFO-EXPO, let me extend congratulations on a job well done and a big thank you for the many long hours you devoted to the success of the Seattle conference. We had over 5,000 attending this year from six continents.

With the guidance of conference chair Gloria Zamora, we implemented some key changes to improve the conference and we certainly did break a few rules and built new bridges, as the conference theme promised. Thank you, Gloria, the Conference Committee, the Local Arrangement Group, and all of the division planners and others who worked so hard to plan an excellent program.

And, thanks to President Stephen Abram, who appointed several key Board workgroups to bring new member benefits to you. The June issue of Information Outlook introduced us to SLA's Second Life presence. Thank you, Jill Hurst-Wahl and the other members of the workgroup for creating SLA's presence in Second Life. Follow the links from their workgroup page to learn more.

If you haven't already checked out the SLA Innovation Laboratory, now is the time to see what chair Cindy Romaine and the workgroup launched at SLA 2008. Thank you, Cindy and workgroup members, for bringing together into one place the latest emerging technologies with which members can experiment and play. Not only did they work for months to develop the lab, but they also were available at the SLA Marketplace to demonstrate these new technologies.

And, thank you, also, to the Learning 2.0 Workgroup, chaired by Deb Hunt. Please take 15 minutes a week between now and 15 September to embark on the learning journey to learn Web 2.0 applications. How many of your chapter or division will accept this challenge?

All of SLA's committees, councils and workgroups are listed on the Web. The length of my column does not allow me to thank each individually. I hope that YOU will take the time to thank your peers who have dedicated their time and talent to develop a program that hopefully advances your career. And, as we complete our first half of the association year, I want to thank all those who have contributed their expertise to help us all along the learning pathway. I cannot wait to see what they will develop during the remainder of the year.

--- Janice R. Lachance

Money Matters
Do you have excess funds in your unit's checking account that you need to transfer to reserves? SLA maintains a pooled fund for chapters and divisions to contribute to and possibly earn a higher rate of interest than a checking account. If you need further information, contact CFO/COO Nancy Sansalone.

SLA Unit Leaders at Annual Conference
Hundreds of SLA leaders from around the globe gathered for the Leadership Development Institute and represented chapters and divisions at their respective cabinet meetings. The Institute and Cabinet Meeting handouts are available to view in the Conference Handouts section of the Web. If you did not already complete the Institute evaluation form, please do. The evaluations help the planners to design a program that best meets leaders? needs. The minutes of the cabinet meetings have been posted on the respective Cabinet Communities of Practice. At the Division Cabinet, divisions were encouraged to develop or review their strategic plans by January 2009; there is a petition being circulated for a proposed Academic Division. At the Chapter Cabinet, chapters were updated on various activities but there were no action items. At the Joint Cabinet meeting, updates were given on Centennial activities, the success of the joint unit awards to encourage non-North American members to attend annual conference with the major goal to gain a better understanding of SLA divisions. The Division Cabinet brought a recommendation to explore the potential of adding the divisions to the chapter wiki for a "unit wiki."

The SLA Board of Directors approved a recommended change in the structure of the SLA Board of Directors. The Chapter and Division Cabinet Chairs will serve three-year terms instead of their current two-year terms. To maintain the current size of the Board, the number of directors (at large) will be reduced from six to four. This change was recommended to balance the work assignments of the Board. The Board has referred this decision to the Bylaws Committee to draft the necessary amendment to the bylaws to affect this change.

And, finally, SLA leaders and award recipients were feted at the SLA Salutes! Leadership and Awards Reception held atop the Space Needle. If you would like to learn more about the award recipients and actually see their presentations from the awards ceremony, check out SLA TV.

If you would like to view or order photos from the conference, you can download them for free in high or low resolution or order prints from The Photo Group.

New Tools for Units Introduced at Conference
If you did not get on the calendar in 2008 for a chapter presidential visit, you still have a virtual opportunity. President-Elect Gloria Zamora videotaped a 12-minute message on the benefits of SLA which can be used by chapters and divisions in conjunction with a meeting. You can preview or use it from the Web (in Leadership Resources). Order a DVD from leadership@sla.org.

Many chapters and some divisions exhibit at other conferences, universities or library-related programs. We have two table-top exhibits available for you to use. There is no charge except return shipping. If you would like to request the booth which will be sent with relevant materials, please complete the online request form.

One of the most exciting and innovative collection of tools for chapters, divisions, caucuses and committees is The SLA Learning Laboratory: A Place to Explore. This is an exciting opportunity for young and young-at-heart members to get involved in SLA leadership by taking on a project using one or more of these tools.

Elections Are Coming
You will be receiving the latest issue of Information Outlook shortly. In it will be profiles of the candidates for the 2009 SLA Board of Directors. Since not all SLA members were able to attend SLA 2008 and INFO- EXPO, encourage your bulletin editors and/or webmasters to link to the candidates' videos. At the same time, use this opportunity to ask members to prepare for receiving their ballot and casting their vote by updating their information under the membership tab on the Web.
