A Message from the Chief Executive Officer - Where's the Paycheck?
My signature goes directly on the paycheck of the 28 staff of SLA. I'm proud to say that we have a dedicated professional team. If I signed paychecks for the more than 1 in 10 members who actively participated in one or more leadership roles in 2008, SLA would be broke!

Although I cannot pay you in the monetary sense, I would like to thank you and congratulate you for your extraordinary efforts in making 2008 an exceptional year for SLA. We've learned through Click U, 23 Things and SLA's Innovation Laboratory, through conferences and programs at SLA 2008 and chapter and division programs. You've contributed your expertise, teaching, and organizational skills to make these a success.

We've also learned from your interesting and informative articles in Information Outlook, your wikis, blogs, Second Life and other social networking media.

You've shared the values and benefits of SLA by recruiting new members, welcoming them and ensuring that they feel a part of the SLA community. And, yes, you've organized fun activities and charitable efforts.

So, where's the paycheck? Your SLA volunteer paycheck is in a different currency. I hope that you can reflect on your year, and your efforts on behalf of SLA's members, and realize that you are richer because:
You did something for a profession that is important to you.
You explored your own strengths.
You learned new skills through direct, hands-on experience.
You made new contacts to advance your business or career.
You expanded your resume by showing your leadership.
You gained satisfaction and recognition in areas beyond the scope of your work.
You met people and made lifelong friendships.
And, finally, you realize that you made a difference.

--- Janice R. Lachance

SLA Board Actions
Each month, the SLA Board of Directors meets by conference call. Documents are posted on the Web. There was no meeting in November. During their December meeting, the board approved the creation of a new Academic Division, effective 1 January 2009, and also approved the Finance Committee report for the 2009 operations budget.

Request a Visit from SLA's President or President-Elect
SLA's president and president-elect each year visit members at chapter events. If you would like to request a visit by either President Gloria Zamora or President-Elect Anne Caputo, complete a chapter visit request form prior to 12 January. These requests will be reviewed by the Chapter Cabinet officers in light of the SLA budget and the presidents' schedules. Please do not contact the presidents directly unless you are seeking to fund the visit on your own.

2009 January Leadership Summit
Are you registered for the 2009 Leadership Summit to be held in Savannah, Georgia, 14-17 January 2009? This unique leadership development program offers attendees a one-stop opportunity to develop leadership skills in their careers--and also skills specific to volunteering in SLA. Seize this chance to step back from your day-to-day routine and engage in group learning and skill-building exercises guaranteed to push your thinking and advance your leadership and management skills. At the same time, you'll have fun and build lasting relationships with other information professionals. Make a difference in your career and SLA. Join us in Savannah as we build a strong future, and remember to pass along this information to your newly elected leaders for 2009.

Stephen McGarvey, a leading authority on unconscious communication, persuasion, and influence will be our keynote speaker.
Leadership Summit will also officially kick off activities for the SLA Centennial. Past president and author of SLA at 100 Guy St. Clair will share the highlights of our rich history. See the unveiling of the commissioned Centennial Showcase artwork that will be available for use at your chapter and division events.

The SLA Georgia Chapter will serve as our host chapter. They have a wiki to welcome you and answer your questions about the area. They also are planning a welcoming reception at Bryson Hall. Built in 1904, the landmark building originally housed what would become the oldest automobile dealership in the South and one of the oldest in the country. It overlooks beautiful Chippewa Square in the heart of the Historic District.

If you want to learn more about SLA leadership prior to the Summit, visit the Leadership Resource Center for more information and leadership training.

Who Will Lead?
The Nominating Committee is looking for the next leaders of SLA. The committee will meet at the SLA Leadership Summit to recommend a slate of nominees to the Board of Directors for 2010. The committee is asking your help in identifying candidates. Send the names of candidates along with some background information on the person (e.g., SLA activities, other volunteer activities, civic experience, etc.) to the SLA Nominating Committee's chair, Lynne McCay, at lmccay@crs.loc.gov. Other members of the Nominating Committee are listed on the Web and you may contact them, too. Position descriptions are available online.

2009 Officer Forms Due
It is time to report all 2009 elected and appointed leaders. 2009 presidents and chairs are responsible for completing the Unit Officer Form. Please complete the form listing the appropriate member name for each office and forward the form to Kim Richter by 1 February 2009. To ensure the accuracy of our records, please complete the form even if you have sent an announcement of your election results. It is important to note that units may choose to fill only selected positions that meet the needs of their members. The only required positions to be filled are those outlined in your governing document/unit practices.

SLA's Leadership Department collects this information primarily for communicating with the leaders common to most units. Expanding the title listing would increase the officer codes to 189+, with the vast majority of the additional codes having only one position with that particular title--for example, webmaster would expand to Web manager, Web administrator, Web editor, Web development chair, Web page committee member, Web communications team member, technology, Web, Internet, Internet committee chair, Web site administrator, Web mistress. Please continue to use the unique leadership titles within your unit in publications and your Web site.

Caucus conveners: please advise Leadership Associate Kim Richter if there are any changes in convener, discussion list owner, or webmaster. Otherwise, we will assume no change.

2009 SLA Honors and Awards Nominations
Do you know an info pro who goes above and beyond for SLA, someone who is pushing the limits and on their way to stardom, or someone who deserves recognition for a lifetime of exceptional work? Now is your chance to shine a spotlight on that special person. SLA has opened the 2009 nomination process, and the committee is eagerly awaiting your submissions. Nominate an SLA member for international recognition by 9 January 2009.

SLA 2009 Registration About to Open
Be among the first to register for the 2009 SLA Annual Conference, which will be held in Washington, D.C., this year. There are exciting keynote speakers like Colin Powell and others and new programming. Mark your calendar. Registration and housing open in early January. Please visit the conference Web site to see more information. SLA has its own stimulus plan. The first 100 SLA members who register will receive US$ 100 off the early-bird registration fee. Check the site on 7 January to get your stimulus plan discount code.

Treasurers Required Reporting
All SLA treasurers listed in the association database as active members received detailed instructions for completing your REQUIRED 2008 Year End Financial Statements, 1009 reporting, and additional financial forms. The financial reporting forms, instructions, and due dates can be found on the Treasurers Community of Practice.

The deadlines are extremely important and must be met in order for the association to close the year and conduct the audit. All units must comply with all of the requirements and deadlines. If not, unit allotments will be withheld.

If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Sansalone.

It has been our pleasure to work with you in 2008. Thank you for all that you have done to make 2008 a spectacular year for SLA and its members.
We look forward to working with you in another leadership role in the near future.

The SLA Leadership Team
Kim Richter, Leadership Associate and Linda Broussard, Chief Community Officer
