A Message from the Chief Executive Officer - Leadership's Role in Membership Development
As SLA is about to launch its fourth Recruit-a-Member campaign, I encourage you and your board to assess your role in membership development.
SLA has evolved into a high-tech organization that has an online university, delivers real-time training to your desktop, sends e-newsletters to the entire membership, and zips e-mails around the globe. But even with today's information highway, the core strength of every association remains its members and their network. This is a valuable asset that associations have over other competitive sources that merely provide information or training.
Because associations have members as the purpose of their work, the opportunity to network and disseminate ideas makes board involvement with membership indispensable. As an elected member of your unit's board of directors, you have most likely worked your way through committee leadership positions, making you a key example of how active membership can invigorate you as an individual and enhance or develop your leadership skills. Sharing your story with your peers can be a very resourceful tool for membership development. SLA's members are generally interested in what you have to say as a leader. Your input carries a great deal of clout.
Board members can also influence other peers in the library and information profession to join SLA by communicating the positive values you or your company have derived from your membership in SLA. People are often more likely to become involved with associations when they can visibly see and connect with someone from their own business or interest.
Developing a healthy membership base is an investment in the association that requires involvement from both the staff and the leadership. The result will be a stronger SLA that can weather the many different climates that an ever-changing world may bring. SLA President Rebecca Vargha has membership growth as one of her key missions. I and your entire staff are dedicated to accomplishing this goal for a robust membership; I encourage you to have a discussion with your Board over the next three months on what they can do, too.
--Janice R. Lachance, Chief Executive Officer
Keynote Speakers Announced for January Leadership Summit and Registration is Open
It is time to make your plans to attend the 2007 Leadership Summit in Reno, NV, USA, 24-27 January 2007. Also, spread the word that the Summit is open to ALL SLA members. Start by encouraging your current elected and appointed leaders to attend as well as those whom you think are at a point in their career where they need to develop leadership skills and qualities.
This year, Stanford University Professor Chip Heath shares how to use the principles of naturally sticky ideas to design messages that would be more effective. At Stanford, he teaches a course, How to Make Ideas Stick, that has now been taught to hundreds of students including managers, teachers, doctors, journalists, venture capitalists, product designers, and film producers. Chip is the co-author (along with his brother, Dan) of a book titled Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die.
The book is being released by Random House in January 2007 and Chip has offered a complimentary prepublication copy to those FIRST TO REGISTER. Additional copies will be available for purchase onsite at a substantial discount. Chip will sign copies of his book during the break immediately following his keynote.
On Friday, SLA's own Ken Haycock, Director of The School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University, will start the day with "Leadership and You: Tackling the Dragon."
Leadership is no longer an option. Know yourself, know your environment and tackle the leadership dragon to make the connections for the change and resources you need to be successful. Begin with your Association, where you enjoy the support and understanding of colleagues (and then extend your value and influence into your own organization).
Ken Haycock has provided leadership training for a wide range of personnel at all levels of the organization, from novice to CEO.
A full schedule, registration details, hotel and travel information are all available on the SLA website. A direct mail will arrive to all members shortly. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact Linda Broussard or Natalie Gozzard.
At present, all meeting space for unit board meetings on Saturday have been filled. If you still require meeting space for a board meeting, we can arrange space on Wednesday afternoon.
Recruit-a-Member CampaignSLA welcomes the fourth year of the Recruit-a-Member Campaign!
Please champion and support this annual campaign by encouraging your board of directors and members to participate starting 1 October ? 31 December. There are worthy SLA prizes for units and one grand prize winner for most members recruited. Your efforts mean that your unit will benefit from increased funding, via allotments. Allotments are calculated based on the number of members in each chapter and division at the end of the year. The goal is to beat last year's numbers, which were 108 members recruited and 124 new members. Call or e-mail SLA's Membership Director, Jill Calabria (+1.703.647.4926), with questions, comments or suggestions.
Explanation of Dues Allotment
SLA international headquarters invoices all members and collects dues. Chapters, divisions and caucuses are supported through dues allotments. These allotments are based upon the number of members in your unit as of 31 December each year. The allotment issued for 2006 in February 2007 will be based upon a twenty percent per member increased allotment. Chapter allotments increase to $14.40 per member from the current level of $12 per member. Division allotments increase to $12 per member from the current $10 per member. Caucus allotments increase to $7.20 per member from the current $6 per member. Chapters and Divisions receive a minimum allotment of $1,125.
There are three mandatory criteria to receive your allotment: an annual and mid-year report and financial reports that are timely and complete.
Lapsed Member Campaign
Increasing SLA's membership numbers and retaining current member continue to be a top priority for the association, which creates a more dynamic networking community for current members. Typically for associations, the lapsed member is the most difficult to win back into membership and SLA is no different. During the months of July, August and September, membership chairs were asked if they would like to participate in the lapsed member campaign. Upon request, they received a list of lapsed members from 1 January 2003 to present. This campaign will continue and purposefully overlap with the recruit-a-member campaign through the remainder of the year. Please check with your membership chair or contact SLA's Membership Director, Jill Calabria, for assistance in recruiting your unit's former members.
