A Message from the CEO

Energy Boost!
I?m not talking about the drink. I?m talking about the energy boost that more than 250 leaders and I received mid-January at the SLA Leadership Summit in Houston. If you weren?t there, you can review some of the presentations from the handouts posted on the Web.

For many of you, this is mid-term in your SLA leadership position, and you may want to re-energize your board or committee. Building and maintaining energy are key leadership attributes. As a chapter, division, committee, or caucus leader, you may not be able to provide a professional keynote speaker, a hosted reception honoring the leaders or even bring everyone together for a mid-year boost as we did in Texas. Why not consider utilizing some of the components designed into the Summit?

1. Have a dialogue about the issues facing the chapter, division, or committee. That will help you and the board to make any mid-year corrections.

2. Look back at your successes and acknowledge them. An example is the SLA 2005 Performance Review.

3. Thank those who have contributed to those successes. Volunteers do not get a monetary reward; they deal in the currency of appreciation for a worthwhile contribution.

4. And, finally, I encourage each of you to have a dialogue with your board on the value of membership in SLA and your chapter, division, or caucus. Have you critically looked at the value and communicated it to your members?

--Janice R. Lachance, CEO

Annual Conference Registration is Open
Registration for SLA's 2006 Annual Conference and related housing is currently open. Please visit the SLA Web site to register and reserve your room.

This year is there is a new hotel reservation policy that follows a trend in the hotel and conference industry. When you make your reservation, you will be required to put down a deposit toward your room. The policy is new to SLA conferences, but, as seasoned travelers know well, requiring deposits is standard procedure for most hotels these days. In addition to protecting the hotel, it protects the guest and it helps SLA conference attendees by allowing for better hotel reservations and better room guarantees. Deposits will be about the cost of one night?s stay and will be charged at the time of reservation. When you check out of your hotel, a corresponding credit will appear on your bill.

Member-Get-a-Member Campaign Winners Announced
The results of the 2005 membership recruitment campaign are in. The winners were announced January 25. SLA and all of its members win, due to the efforts of our members sharing the value of their membership and inviting others to join. Our network expanded tremendously during the period between October 1 and December 31, 2005. The grand prize winner of the Member-Get-a-Campaign was Susan Brewsaugh. She received the grand prize package at the 2006 Leadership Summit in Houston, TX. Susan received a full conference registration, two night?s hotel stay at the Hyatt, two VIP passes to Baltimore attractions, and a Baltimore amenity gift basket. The Chapter and Division winners to recruit the most new members were the Washington, D.C., Chapter and Competitive Intelligence Division; the Asian Chapter and the Government Information Division had the largest percentage increase in their membership.
