A Message from the Executive Director

The Listening Skills of a Leader
Language is the means by which we communicate with each other. According to Webster's dictionary, a leader is "one who leads or guides." The language of a leader is the communication of one who shows the way. As a leader you will be called upon regularly to share your vision and inspire others. In order to develop that vision, I think you first need to listen to what your members, your work colleagues and others are really saying.

Have you tested and exercised your listening skills lately? Try this. For one full day, listen openly. Don't leave a conversation until you're sure the speaker feels heard. Be patient and focus on their thoughts, feelings, tone, and behaviors. Wait until the person has finished speaking before you begin to consider your response. Don't let your mind wander or your emotions sweep you off purpose. Leaders who truly listen see people, situations, and solutions that non-listeners never see, which allows for increased levels of teamwork, workability, and solutions.

I spend a great deal of my work day listening to you and many members through visits to chapters and other information industry meetings. At almost every meeting, I?ve listened to members express that they want the association to institute electronic voting so that they can be included in major association decisions regardless of where they live and their ability to attend in person the annual business meeting. I?ve also heard the plea for simplification in the governance processes. The Board has listened, too, and the two changes to the bylaws we will entertain at the Annual Business Meeting in Toronto are a result of listening to you. I hope you will be present and vote at the Annual Business Meeting just prior to the Cabinet meetings at Annual Conference.

---- Janice R. Lachance, Executive Director

Attend and Vote

Immediately preceding the Chapter and Division Cabinet Meetings will be the first half of the Annual Business Meeting. The SLA Board of Directors is offering two proposals to amend SLA?s Bylaws and Certificate of Incorporation. These proposed amendments would (1) give members the ability to vote in elections and for future bylaws amendments through the convenience of an online voting system and (2) simplify the association?s financial, operational, and leadership transition processes by aligning the association?s governance year with the beginning of its fiscal year.

A part of your responsibility as a member, and certainly as a leader, is to cast your vote on these proposed amendments. The Annual Business Meeting is Tuesday, June 8, 2005, 5:15-6:15 p.m., in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (Constitution Hall). For more information on these proposed amendments, go the Bylaws Information Center.

Leadership Activites at Annual Conference

Chapter and Division Leaders, are you ready for an exciting, educational and informative Leadership Development Institute? Join the rest of SLA's Leadership in Toronto, ON, Canada, for SLA's Annual Conference. The Leadership Development Institute will be Sunday, June 5, 2005, 9 a.m. - Noon in Room 104A-B of the Toronto Convention Center. Take a sneak peak at the agenda for the Institute. To assist you in preparing for your role in the Cabinet Meetings, the chapter and division cabinet agendas plus the Board agenda and documents have been placed on the website. Agendas will be available at the meetings although the documents are being posted to the web. Please remember to print and bring with you any documents that you would like to have as reference; printed copies will be limited onsite. The Chapter and Division Cabinet Meetings will be Tuesday, at 6:30 pm in Room 104A-B and Room 104C-D respectively. You will be honored with a Leadership Reception immediately following the Cabinet meetings.

What Does a "Diverse Membership" Mean to an International Organization

The Diversity Leadership Development Program Committee invites all who are interested, and especially your chapter or division's diversity committee chairperson, to attend a meeting at Annual Conference. This is an opportunity to meet, share success stories and discuss the question: "What does a 'diverse membership' mean to an international organization?"

The meeting is Tuesday, June 7, 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Toronto Convention Centre, Room 201A. This is an open forum designed for sharing techniques and methods that foster leadership development within SLA, the workplace, and the profession.

Blog with Us in Toronto

SLA is launching its first blog at the annual conference in Toronto next month. We hope to provide plenty of coverage from the conference, and one of the best ways is through the eyes of the members who attend. Information Outlook editor John Adams has invited all bulletin editors or their designates to be official convention bloggers. They are invited to write about some of the broader activities -- general sessions, activities in the exhibit hall, workshops, seminars, division, chapter and other unit activities (no assignments are made). Perspectives are what is needed. Make sure that your chapter, division or caucus is represented by contacting jadams@sla.org. Read more.

Membership Recruiting is a Year-Round Opportunity
This month we have added a new area, the Recruit-a-Member Center to SLA's website in the Membership area.

This new e-recruitment tool is designed to make it easy for SLA members to send invitational e-mails to fellow colleagues who are not currently members of SLA. There are tips for recruiting new members, a Recruit-A-Member Toolkit which has links to SLA's Recruit-A-Member e-mail templates, online membership application, and membership brochures. Each Recruit-A-Member e-mail template is designed to meet your specific recruiting needs; which may be to invite a colleague to join SLA, to attend conference, or to recruit a Library and Information Science student. This information has been sent to the membership chair and will be promoted to all members.

Placing Standing Orders for Labels
Many units place standing orders for labels, e-mail distributions or reports. This is just a reminder that all standing orders expire in June 2005 and a new order should be placed. The Unit Label, Roster, and VIP Report Request Form is available on the web. Please alert your bulletin editors, program planner, list owner, or others who may utilize this service.

Leadership Code of Responsibility
SLA Leadership Code of Responsibility Form is due August 15, 2005. Professional liability insurance is paid by Association Headquarters for the directors/officers of SLA units (chapters, divisions, caucuses and committees). A unit manager who seeks to be insulated from potential liability ought to direct efforts toward doing a conscientious job on behalf of the unit and SLA.

The SLA Leadership Code of Responsibility Form is approved by the Board of Directors to assure that the Association's and its units' officers are operating as a single entity. All voting members of your Board and/or advisory board should sign the form. This is the minimum and each unit may expand to other appointed officers if desired.

For further background and discussion of this issue, please see the "Legal Issues" section of the Chapter or Division Recommended Practices. If you still have questions or concerns, please contact Linda Broussard, associate executive director, leadership and member services, at lbroussard@sla.orgor 1-703-647-4938.

Staff Change
Executive Director Janice Lachance has announced the addition of two key management staff. Nancy A. Gaffney Sansalone will join the SLA staff as deputy executive director and chief financial officer. Lachance said. ?She brings a wealth of experience in finance and association management. We believe her knowledge and background will serve our membership well and help us to accomplish our long-term goals.? She will be the liaison to the Finance Committee and the unit treasurers.

Jill Calabria is stepping into the position of director, membership marketing. She brings a strong marketing background and international association management experience which will offer an expanded focus on membership development.

Connie Brown completes the new additions to SLA staff. As executive assistant, she works closely with Executive Director Janice Lachance and the Board of Directors.

Make a point to meet these new staff if you are in Toronto for the Annual Conference.
