Embracing New Technologies to Meet Your Needs
I want to thank all of the members who took the time to participate in our first-ever e-ballot just completed. Your Board and I heard you when told repeatedly in my visits to chapters that you wanted to participate in the Association?s governance even if you could not attend the annual business meeting. We embraced not only that wish but also the electronic technology you preferred. The results of our survey to voting members indicated that the process was straightforward and easy. I applaud our members for taking on a new technology concurrently with considering the bylaws vote to allow for a restructure of our dues. This will allow us to continue to meet the needs of SLA?s members.
As a result of this success?and, again, requests from chapter and division leaders, we will make this tool available for the units. This will be another tool to make your leadership role easier and without direct cost.
Thursday?s afternoon sessions will be a choice of two intensive workshops conducted by Leadership Outfitters. The two sessions are: The Triple Whammy: Change, Communication, and Conflict; and Cracker Jack Membership Strategies and Volunteer Involvement Techniques
If your chapter, division, committee or caucus is planning to meet at the 2006 Leadership Summit in Houston, TX, USA, please contact the Leadership staff for program development and function room reservations. Recruit-a-Member Campaign UnderwayThe 2005 member-get-a-member campaign is underway. As an SLA member, you already know the value of your membership. Two chapters and two divisions will win a full registration to the 2006 Annual Conference in Baltimore! And,one lucky recruiter will win a prize, too! For details, visit http://www.sla.org/content/membership/getamember/index.cfm.Winning Chapter Presidents and Division Chairs will determine the SLA Member to receive each prize. Remember, the campaign runs until December 31, 2005. All chapters and divisions will win with increased membership which translates into a larger dues allotment next year.

Money Matters: Deposit Deadlines for Conference Events and Tax Information Due
Planners and treasurers are reminded that a 50% deposit on all audio-visual items and food and beverage orders for the 2006 annual conference is due May 1, 2006.
Also, treasurers must submit a report of individuals who are U.S. citizens paid over $600 for services during calendar year 2005 no later than January 15, 2006. This only applies to payment for services to individuals (i.e., honoraria, consulting, etc.) and does not apply to reimbursement of expenses.

Look within your Divisions, Chapters and Committees to identify those who are ready to take on that next level of leadership. The Nominating Committee is looking for "a few good people" to populate the slate. And, it might well be you! Leadership of SLA is always important, but now more than ever we need strong and visionary leaders who, while grounded in the present, can see where the Association needs to be. Send names along with some background information on the person (i.e., SLA activities, other volunteer activities, civic experience, etc.) to the Nominating Committee via the chair, Wilda Newman, at wildanewman@yahoo.com.
Help SLA Blog Platform Open for Units
The blog platform that SLA used for its 2005 annual conference, disaster awareness, and other topics is available for use by SLA units. SLA will provide guidance to units that wish to establish blogs; the unit blogger will then be responsible for maintenance and updates. For information, contact John T. Adams III at jadams@sla.org.
