• As the table above shows, the mean increase in salaries from 1999 to 2000 was 4.2% for Canadian respondents and 5.9% for U.S. respondents.
• The median increase in salary for special librarians was 3.8% in Canada and 4.0% in the United States.
• Both mean and median salary increases in Canada and the United States gained relative to the inflation rate (3.5% in Canada, 3.1% in the U.S.) between April 1999 and April 2000.
• The salary figures above are based on the annual earnings for full-time workers, not including overtime earnings, bonuses, benefits and deferred compensation.
Survey Administration In early April, 2000 SLA mailed questionnaires to a random sample of approximately 50% of the U.S. membership and to all of the regular and associate Canadian members, a total of 6200 surveys. A second mailing was sent in June reminding respondents who had not completed the survey of its importance. Simultaneously, SLA posted a similar reminder on all SLA discussion lists. Members returned a total of 2718 surveys to Association Research, Inc. (ARI). After eliminating 128 surveys returned for incorrect addresses, the completion rate for the 2000 salary survey is 45.8%.
Organization of the 2000 Salary Survey Report The 2000 salary survey report has been reorganized so that information likely to be of use to a single user is more likely to be grouped together. Specific changes are as follows: • Data on the United States and Canada has been separated so that all tables relevant to each country are now grouped together. Chapters one through five include Canadian data, while chapters six through ten are U.S. data.
• Each chapter now represents the data for a specific job description. See the Summary of Contents below for a listing of the job descriptions covered by a full chapter.
• The data within each chapter is divided into three sections: demographic, institutional and job-specific. Demographic data relates to personal characteristics of the respondent, institutional data relates to characteristics of the respondent's employer and job-specific data is that which relates to the particular job held by the respondent.
