*All salaries in Canadian tables are reported in Canadian dollars. The exchange rate on April 1, 2005, was $1.21 Canadian = $1 U.S.
The 2005 SLA Salary Survey results show that the average salary increases for SLA members have outpaced inflation again, although by a lesser margin than last year. Based on salaries as of April 1, the mean percentage increase in salaries for 2005 over 2004 was 4.6% for U.S. based respondents. For the same 12 month period, the Consumer Price Index rose only 3.5%. For Canadian members, salaries were 3.6% higher on April 1, 2005 than a year earlier, while the CPI had only increased by 2.4%.
The average salary for US members who answered the survey was $65,482, compared with $63,151 in 2004, and for Canadian members Canadian $63,083 compared with Canadian $63,548. The apparent anomaly between salary amounts and percentage increases can be explained by the fact that the dollar amounts reflect the average salaries of the respondents to the 2004 and 2005 surveys, whereas the percentage increases reflect the percentage increases of the respondents of the 2005 survey over their salaries in 2004.
A workplace study based on an additional survey sent with the salary survey to members' HR departments will be published with the salary survey results. The workplace study enhances the SLA annual salary survey results with additional information about the benefits, trends in hiring and expenditure, and changes in job descriptions and competencies of information professionals.
More information on the survey results and workplace study is available in the November 2005 issue of the Information Management column in Information Outlook.
SLA Salary Calculator
SLA has developed the salary calculator as an online interactive tool to analyze salaries based on multiple characteristics, rather than two dimensional in the print version. The 2005 SLA Salary Calculator is available to purchasers of the 2005 salary survey only.
