PAM Award Winners

Dr. Peter B. Boyce, former Executive Officer of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), is the 1999 recipient of the PAM Division Award and Nancy Anderson, Mathematics Librarian, University of Illinois at Urbana/ Champaign (UIUC), is the 1999 recipient of the Division's Achievement Award. The following is extracted from the nominations for the two recipients.

During his tenure at the AAS, Dr. Boyce established a strong working relationship between the Society and those who serve the information needs of its membership. His leadership led to an extraordinary cooperation between the AAS and astronomy librarians including the placement of a library liaison on the AAS Publications Board. Under his guidance, the electronic Astrophysical Journal moved from a hazy idea to vaporware to reality, and became finally the model and benchmark for electronic journals. Along the way, he continued to insist on asking librarians for comments and incorporated their advice into both the journal and its license agreement, now considered models for the rest of the industry. After his retirement, Dr. Boyce co-chaired the third meeting on Library and Information Services in Astronomy (LISA3). His leadership helped to make this one of the best gatherings ever and one that serves as a model for cooperation among diverse groups.

Nancy Anderson was Division Chair/Elect and Chair and has chaired committees and moderated roundtables. She has served the Association as its representative to the Section of Science and Technology Libraries of IFLA. Nancy has been especially active in supporting the mathematics community's access to literature. She established at the UIUC Mathematics Library a facility to obtain as much of the monographic literature reviewed by Mathematical Reviews as possible, particularly from the Soviet Union. Her two editions of French Mathematical Seminars have helped in identifying them and locating copies. She co-authored with Lois Pausch the book Guide to Library Service in Mathematics. Nancy has served as a member of and co-chaired the AMS Library where she participated in the preparation of a survey of mathematics libraries which provided valuable comparative data.

In 1994, Nancy received the PAM Division Award recognizing her work on the AMS Library Committee (Jointly with Professor James Rovnyak) and the preparation of her landmark French seminars publications.

PAM Award Acceptance Letter

Dr. Peter B. Boyce, Senior Consultant for Electronic Publishing

First, I truly apologize for my inability to be here to accept this award. I accepted invitations to give papers or attend four meetings in the span of three weeks, and I just could not fit this trip into my schedule. Fear not, though, I will be getting my share of librarians this year, since I will be talking at the NASIG meeting next week in Pittsburgh. Although they are not "Special Librarians," I'm sure they will be equally quick to tell me where I am going wrong.

Which brings me to the real reason for these remarks. I feel so honored by this award. The last eight years of working with so many of you, have been very rewarding. I knew that I could always count upon Sarah, Marlene, Ellen, Uta, Brenda, and all the PAM members to give me real feedback, useful comments, and no-nonsense advice. Whether it was what made the electronic journals most useful to the readers or what made licensing and access easiest for the librarians, I knew I could count upon the accuracy of the feedback from PAM members. I also knew that I had better pay attention and heed the advice, or every astronomy librarian around the world would know about it instantly.

In all seriousness, I have enjoyed my collaborative association with all of you. I appreciate what you have done to make the AAS electronic journals such a success. I have leaned heavily upon your well-organized network, and I continue to marvel about how well you continue to play the role of information experts in this new electronic world.

But, most of all, I have enjoyed meeting and working with all of you as true and honest friends.

So, this is a very special award, which I will truly treasure.

Thank you all -- and a special thanks to Sarah for standing in for me to accept your award on my behalf.
