PAM Business Meeting

SLA Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics Division -- 1998/99 Business Meeting Tuesday, 8 June 1999 -- Hilton, Marquette Room, Minneapolis, MN 7:30 - 8:45 a.m.

The PAM business meeting began with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Brenda Corbin, Chair, thanked the American Physical Society (APS) for sponsoring the breakfast. APS representatives Mina Chung, Sharon Lensky, Dr. Thomas McIlrath, Charlie Muller and Bob Thurston were introduced. The SLA Board Proctor was Doris Helfer, Division Cabinet Chair-Elect.

Jane Holmquist, Secretary, reported that the 1998 Business Meeting minutes had been approved and published in the August 1998 PAM Bulletin, available on the PAM website. Kris Fowler, Treasurer, reported that the 1998 Annual Financial Statement of the Division was published in the May 1999 PAM Bulletin and the Division's Mid-year Financial Statement will appear in the August 1999 PAM Bulletin.

Brenda Corbin thanked retiring Bulletin Editor Laurel Kristik for a job well done.

Dick Funkhouser, Chair of the Awards Committee, presented the PAM Division Award to Peter Boyce, former Executive Officer of the American Astronomical Society (see full text of citation and acceptance speech read by Sarah Stevens-Rayburn on Peter's behalf elsewhere in the Bulletin). The PAM Achievement Award was presented to Nancy Anderson, Mathematics Librarian at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana (see full text of citation elsewhere in Bulletin).

Molly White presented a special plaque to the American Mathematical Society thanking them for publishing the PAM Membership Directory annually since 1982. AMS representatives receiving the award were Bert TePaske-King, Sherry O'Brian, Tim McMahon and Linda Guccione.

Brenda introduced Christina Louis from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bangalore, India as the recipient of the first PAM Membership Award, i.e. a two-year membership in SLA awarded to a librarian from a developing country. Christina was also the recipient of the Sci-Tech Division's International Librarian's Award which funded her travel to the SLA Annual Conference in Minneapolis so we were very fortunate to have her present with us.

Greg Youngen, Chair of the Nominating Committee, presented the following slate of candidates: Jane Holmquist, Chair-Elect and Ann Jensen, Secretary, which was approved by those in attendance.

Dorothy Manderschied announced that she will be retiring as Mathematics Librarian at Michigan State University on July 1st, but will continue as Archivist until October 1st. She has drafted a set of retention guidelines for our Division and is also working on part II of a history of PAM. Brenda thanked Dorothy for her many years of service. Sara Rutter will become the new PAM Archivist as of October 1st.

Sylvia Toombs, Membership Chair, reported that as of April 5th there are 213 members in the PAM Division. The membership directory information is currently in a TeX file, thanks to Kris Fowler. Pat Hausman will be the new Membership Chair.

David Stern, Chair of the Networking Committee (who is an SLA Board Candidate!) reported that there are currently 446 subscribers to PAMnet, which now has a threaded archive, thanks to Thurston Miller.

Brenda thanked Judy Matthews, Chair of the Public Relations Committeee, forall her work on the new PAM brochure. Judy also made PAM sponsorship signs which were given to our vendors to display in their exhibit booths.

Barbara Chu reported on behalf of Jeanette Regan for the International Relations Committee. Christina Louis reported on the newly-established Asia-Pacific Forum which is supported by SLA and the Australian Library Association and included members from China, Hawaii, Australia, India and Latin America. Jeanette has established an electronic discussion list for the APF.

Brenda reported on plans for the SLAGlobal 2000 meeting to be held in Brighton, England in October 20000. The PAM proposal for a panel discussion on equity of access to information throughout the world was accepted and planning is currently underway.

Brenda thanked Marlene Cummins for providing continuity for our Division by maintaining the PAM Procedures Manual on the PAM webpage, Peggy Dominy for the PAM Banner she designed and made for us, and Kris Fowler and Janice Jaguszewski for the wonderful hospitality they provided in Minneapolis.

Molly White, PAM Chair for 1999-2000, distributed a list of the PAM Committees for the coming year, and reported that she is already involved in the planning of next year's SLA annual conference in Philadelphia.

Karen Croneis, Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, thanked her committee and all the respondents to the survey, and encouraged everyone to refer to the PAM website for full details.

Carol Hutchins asked if there were PAM members who planned to attend the Sci-Tech meetings at ALA in New Orleans later in June. There were none.

Liz Bryson reported that she and Uta Grothkopf of ESO were setting up a website for observatory annual reports.

A motion was made, and the meeting was adjourned.
