Chair Jane Holmquist opened the meeting at 7:45 a.m. and welcomed those in attendance. Members of the Board present were:

  • Jane Holmquist - Chair
  • Kris Fowler - Chair Elect
  • Molly White - Past Chair
  • Michael Fosmire - Treasurer
  • Ann Jensen - Secretary

Announcements
Jane acknowledged Kris Fowler's great success at fund raising this year; and thanked Bob Kelly and Barbara Hicks of the American Physical Society for their support this breakfast meeting, and their continuing support of the division.

Dartmouth College is currently has an opening for a Physics Librarian, the position formerly held by PAM member Mark Mounts who has taken a position as Business and Engineering Librarian at Dartmouth. Resumés may be sent to Barbara de Felice at Dartmouth College.

International Member Award
Jane introduced Myrna Koch Cifuentes from Santiago Chile, who is attending the conference as this year's winner of the PAM International Member Award and the PAM International Travel Award. Ann Jensen presented Myrna with the award. Last year's International Travel Awardee, Nancy Gomez, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has been fortunate to use her frequent flyer miles to attend the SLA conference again for the second of her two-year International Member Award. She is acting as Myrna's mentor and buddy for this conference.

Myrna thanked the group for her award, especially Jane Holmquist and Molly White. Her home country Chile is very large, and can learn much from SLA and the PAM division members. She is most appreciative for this opportunity to visit and meet so many PAM members.

SLA Diversity Leadership Award
Jane introduced Jeanette Regan, Astronomy Librarian at the Australian National University at Canberra, and the winner of the 2001 SLA Diversity Leadership Award. Jane noted Jeanette's outstanding efforts to broaden the international scope and focus to our international members, specifically as chair of the PAM International Relations Committee, and her co-chairmanship, with Brenda Corbin, of the PAM committee on SLA's Global 2000 conference in Brighton, England.

Membership
Pat Hausman announced that PAM has 38 new members this year, including new members from three countries not previously represented in PAM membership: Russia, Norway and Greece. Our total membership, including new and de-activated members, is 243, a net increase of 7 over last year. Pat also acknowledged improvements in SLA membership data and encouraged members to update their personal membership information via the on-line data forms on the SLA website. While SLA membership is declining somewhat, PAM continues to enjoy growth and the invigoration of new members.

Networking Committee
Kris Fowler announced for Kathleen Robertson, Networking Committee Chair, that on Saturday, June 9, 2001 the SLA Board of Directors rescinded a decision that was made at January 2001 midwinter meeting, to close all SLA listserves to non-members. A task force will be formed to consider all issues related to open or closed listserves, and PAM members will be kept apprised in advance of any decisions.

Treasurer's Report
Michael Fosmire, Treasurer, announced that the division finances are healthy and in the black as they have been for the past several years. This year, PAM has increased both our sponsorship and our programming. PAM has also contributed this year to the David Bender Endowment for International Development.

Awards Committee Report
The Awards committee is comprised of Diane Fortner (Chair), Alice Primack and Joanne Goode.

Diane announced David Stern as the winner of the 2001 PAM Achievement Award, for his contributions to SLA at the national level, his particular contributions to the literature of the physical sciences through his 2001 publication Guide to the Literature of the Physical Sciences. Diane read portions of David's award letter which described him as epitomizing excellence in librarianship, as one whose name is synonymous with the PAM Division, and as someone who was "thinking outside the box long before the box was invented".

David made some brief remarks, thanking the division and the committee, and acknowledging some of the positive changes that he has seen occur over his years of involvement with the PAM division.

The PAM Division Award is given periodically to someone whose work improves the exchange of information in the sciences, and thus contributes to the free exchange of information for PAM members. This year, the award was presented to Guenther Eichhorn, for his groundbreaking work in the genesis and development of the Astrophysical Data System, that represents an unparalleled shift in the free distribution of astronomical information.

Two letters of recognition were presented to Bob Kelly of the American Physical Society, and to Tim Ingoldsby of the American Institute of Physics, for their commitment to the open sharing of ideas and as defenders of freedom of speech, throughout the protracted legal challenges of Gordon and Breach publishers to the Barschall study of journal pricing.

Award Winners

L-R: David Stern (PAM Achievement Award), Myrna Koch Cifuentes (PAM International Member Award), Tim Ingoldsby (commendation for AIP's pursuit of Gordon and Breach case), Guenther Eichhorn (PAM Division Award), Bob Kelly (commendation for APS's pursuit of Gordon and Breach case)

Secretary's Report
Ann Jensen, Secretary, reported that the minutes of this 2000 Business Meeting were published in the August 2000 issue of the PAM Bulletin. Minutes of this 2001 meeting will appear in the August 2001 issue of the PAM Bulletin.

Nominating Committee includes Ellen Bouton, Chair, Donna Cromer, Donna Coletti and Shaun Hardy.

Ellen announced the slate of officers:

  • Chair-Elect: Karen Croneis, University of Alabama.

A verbal vote was taken and the motion to elect the slate carried unanimously.
