There are currently ten countries in the Central and Eastern Europe region negotiating to enter to the European Union (EU): Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, and Bulgaria. The Citizens
Democracy Corps (CDC) has supported and developed hundreds of small and medium
sized businesses in Central/Eastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus Region,
Thailand, Guatemala, and Central Asia, assisted in the growth of market
economies and a variety of stabilizing, democratic institutions, and provided
new market opportunities and jobs for the region's companies and citizens. CDC
was formed in 1990 by the American private sector to enlist American volunteers
specifically in support of the transition to free market economies in the NIS
and CEE, where decades of government control and central planning left people
and institutions poorly prepared to compete in a market-driven, global economy.
At the heart of CDC's programs are its volunteer advisors drawn from the top
ranks of American business. All have a minimum of eight years senior level
management experience and most are active managers or owners who give several
months of their time and talents as doers, planners, and mentors. Active
countries of interest include Azerbaijan, Central Asia, Central and Eastern
Europe, Kosovo, Russia and Ukraine.
