Practices for Divisions and Sections

I. Practice
It is the practice of Special Libraries Association to establish guidelines for division chairs and chairs-elect. The guidelines delineate the responsibilities of key officers and should aid in the understanding of the relationship among division officers, Association officers and units
II. Purpose
These Guidelines are intended to serve as a reference for division chairs and chairs-elect. They contain valuable, “must know” information on division responsibilities, association structure, policies and procedures.

The strength of the Association as a whole is greatly dependent upon the strength of the divisions. The organization and activities of the divisions are carried on within the framework of the Association. SLA receives direct impetus in its professional activities from the work and support of the division and through cooperative projects undertaken by two or more divisions. In turn, divisions receive the benefits of an international body for the collective promotion and advancement of the library profession.

III. Practice/Procedure
Guidelines are placed on the SLA website and/or copies can be requested from SLA Headquarters office. Guidelines are updated annually.
IV. Responsibility
In cooperation with the Chief Community Officer and the Division Cabinet Chair and Chair-Elect are responsible for the administration of this policy.
