HOW TO SUBMIT
YOUR SLA PROFESSIONAL PAPER
FOR PUBLICATION

Please follow the guidelines outlined herein while preparing your paper. Since your paper will be published in a book with the other papers given at Conference, it is important that they look uniform because it improves the appearance of the book. This book will be sold at conference. As a contributor, you will receive a complimentary copy upon publication.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

All papers should be submitted on 8 1/2 x 11 inch white paper. Leave a one-inch margin on all sides and use single spacing. All paragraphs should be indented one-half inch. Leave one line-space between paragraphs. You should use full justification--no ragged edges. Use 12 point Times Roman for your text.

Titles and Headings

The title of your paper should be centered at the top of the page. Chapter or division titles (Endnotes, References, Bibliography) should also be centered. Sub-headings should be used when necessary to help guide your reader. Sub-heads should be kept short and succinct. Most papers don't warrant more than A- and B-level sub-headings. If your paper is very technical and you feel that the reader needs more guidance, you may use C- or even D-level sub-heads if necessary.

Begin the text of your paper four line spaces below the title.

Type specifications and placement

The title of your paper should be in 18 point type centered at the top of the page. All author names, degrees, and affiliations should appear directly below the title of the paper, centered, and in 16 point type. A-heads should be in 14 point type, all upper case letters, centered. B-heads should be in 14 point type, upper and lower case letters, centered. C-heads should be in 12 point type, upper and lower case, flush left. If possible also bold face your sub-heads.

D-heads. D-heads should be in 12 point italic type, upper and lower case. They begin the paragraph and are followed by a period. It is not necessary to bold face D-heads.

What Not to Do

Do not use footnotes placed at the bottom of each page, use Endnotes instead for references and notes. Make sure you label the notes as Endnotes. SLA's preferred style guide is The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition.

Do not underline titles, words, sub-heads -- use italics instead.

Avoid single lines at the top or bottom of a page.

Do not use an outline format where numbers are used as the subheads.

Avoid one sentence paragraphs.

Other Things to Remember

It is all right to use charts, graphs, illustrations etc. as long as they can be photocopied/printed easily without losing important detail. Graphics, charts, and illustrations must be black and white. You should number them consecutively as "figures." Example, Figure 1, Figure 2 etc.

Please spell check your paper carefully and read it through several times to check for mistakes. Unfortunately due to our time constraints we cannot edit your paper in any way. What you give to us will be printed as is.

This information has been presented to you in the proper format including typeface, point sizes, sub-headings, spacing etc. Please use it as a guide when preparing your paper.
