SLA Joins Call for Universal Right to Information Access
SLA has joined with more than 260 educational, library, and information organizations to support an appeal for worldwide access to information that is necessary to promote sustainable development and improve people’s lives.
SLA has signed on to the Lyon Declaration on Access to Information and Development, a statement drafted at the 2014 General Conference and Assembly of IFLA, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. The declaration notes that the United Nations is crafting a development agenda for the period 2016-2030, and it calls upon the member states of the U.N. to share information that will enable all people to achieve the goals of the new agenda.
“Sustainable development seeks to ensure the long-term socio-economic prosperity and well-being of people everywhere,” the declaration states. “The ability of governments, parliamentarians, local authorities, local communities, civil society, the private sector and individuals to make informed decisions is essential to achieving it. … We, the undersigned, therefore call on Member States of the United Nations to acknowledge that access to information, and the skills to use it effectively, are required for sustainable development, and ensure that this is recognised in the post-2015 development agenda.”
