Volunteer with SLA!

Tara Murray Grove – 2020 SLA President
Fellow SLA Members,
My volunteer experience within SLA has been one of the most valuable parts of my membership. As a new member and new information professional, volunteering to serve as a discussion list moderator and, later, webmaster of my local community helped me build relationships with other SLA members and gave me confidence and new skills. These experiences prepared me to take on leadership roles in my SLA communities, and, later, on the SLA Board of Directors.
My volunteer roles have not only helped strengthen our association—they have also helped me succeed at work. I have benefitted immeasurably from accepting new challenges and working alongside fellow SLA members, and I have been able to translate these experiences into leadership and teamwork skills that have made me more valuable to my organization and potential employers.
There are volunteer opportunities large and small in SLA that will help you to strengthen your leadership and teamwork skills, build your personal network, and succeed in your job and career. Join me in growing SLA by starting or continuing to volunteer in 2021.
The SLA Call for Volunteers is open and available through December 2nd this year. The volunteer form gives you the opportunity to submit your name for consideration to fill volunteer positions within your community and on SLA committees, councils, and task forces.
NOTE: If you’re currently serving in a volunteer position and wish to continue in that position in 2021, you must reaffirm your commitment using the same form.
As a longtime SLA volunteer, I can tell you that you get back as much as you give. Seize this opportunity to grow professionally and personally while making a difference to the profession, the association, and your fellow members.
Thank you for stepping up to build SLA’s future.
