Get Your Passports in Advance of SLA 2014

We have posted encouragements to renew or apply for your passport well in advance of SLA 2014 Annual Conference in Vancouver next June 8 – 10.

With early registration for the SLA 2014 Annual Conference now open, the time is right now to apply for your U.S. passport or to renew your passport.

*Post updated after US Government shutdown ends: the Government shutdown is now over, and the time is NOW to apply as the U.S. Department of State is offering faster-than-average processing times. Beat the spring and summer rush when you apply now, and you can receive your passport in less than the 4-6 weeks that it typically takes, without paying any expedite fees.

Just in case any government furloughs occur in the future, the below information will still hold true regarding U.S. Passport processing:

Fortunately for US citizens and future conference-goers, the government shutdown won’t have any effect for Americans applying for their passports. This good news is due to the fact that passport fees cover the cost of the passport document and passport services.

Some helpful information from the State Department regarding a government shutdown:

  • In the event of a lapse in appropriations, the Department of State will continue passport and visa operations as well as provide critical services to U.S. citizens overseas.
  • Processing time for passport applications remain at four weeks or less for routine service and two weeks door-to-door for expedited service.
  • Customers planning to travel within two weeks or requiring passports to obtain foreign visas should make an appointment at the nearest passport agency.
  • Please check back for updates to the situation.

Find more information from the Department of State, and remember, no time like the present when it comes to passport renewal!
