If You Write It, They Will Come

How can librarians increase the profitability of their libraries? How can they improve students' understanding of the scientific research process? How can they increase diversity among library staff?

Every year, SLA members share their answers to these and other questions challenging the special library field. They do so by writing research papers and presenting them at the SLA Annual Conference & INFO-EXPO. The contributed paper sessions are among the most revealing and rewarding conference activities because they provide a glimpse into the issues, trends and initiatives that drive our profession and our future.

SLA is now accepting proposals for contributed papers to be presented at the 2012 Annual Conference. Topics for the papers must be related to the conference theme, "Practicing Agility in an Open World Economy," and should focus on putting ideas into practice. Proposals will be subjected to a blind review by a panel of SLA members, and the strongest proposals will be selected for development into full papers.

Proposed papers must meet these requirements:

  • At least one author is a member of SLA;
  • At least one author commits to presenting the paper at the SLA 2012 Annual Conference;
  • The proposal is received by 12 December 2011;
  • The paper has not been published in, or submitted to, any other publication or conference planning group; and
  • The author(s) must be willing to sign a copyright assignment form that will permit SLA to use the paper in various formats.

To submit a proposal, send an abstract of your paper to Helen Losch at helenlosch@gmail.com. Abstracts should be 250-300 words in length, or roughly one page in 12-point text. In addition to summarizing the problem, apporach, results, and conclusions, the abstract should identify the core audience (academic, government, etc.) for the paper.

All applicants will be notified of the panel's decision on or about 1 February 2012. Completed papers and copyright assignment forms will be due 1 June 2012. Papers will be presented at the conference, which will be held 15-18 July 2012 in Chicago.
