KMKS102. The Knowledge Audit: Evaluating Intellectual Capital Use

KMKS102 provides techniques and guidelines for understanding and utilizing the knowledge audit, the evaluation tool that combines the methodologies of the standard needs analysis (asking what research resources and services people require to do their work) and the information audit (how research resources and services are produced or acquired and how the resources are actually used) to establish and evaluate knowledge assets for the larger parent organization. Topics covered include the following:
- the distinctions between the needs analysis and the knowledge audit;
- how to match organizational knowledge strategy with service delivery goals;
- the Henczel seven-stage audit model; and
- determining the scope and resource allocations for conducting the knowledge audit.
At the conclusion of KMKS102, participants will use learning outcomes from the course and their understanding of the current or potential value of the knowledge audit to their parent organization to design an action plan for implementing a specific service enhancement for their parent organization. This exercise will enable participants to return to the knowledge management/knowledge services workplace with a product that can serve as a foundation for a knowledge audit.
A course assessment will measure and evaluate the degree of understanding that participants achieve over the learning process.
While the primary goal in developing these programs is to allow SLA members to earn a Certificate in Knowledge Management, each of these courses has inherent value and may be taken a la carte. KMKS101 is recommended, but not required, to be taken before this course.
