The only gadget I need
SLA Board Candidate Question 3: What is the newest “techie” gadget that you have/would like to have, and how do/would you use it to improve the work relationship that you have with your primary clientele?
Tara Murray, candidate for Division Cabinet Chair-elect:
SLA is a great place to discover new gadgets. From perusing the booths at the Annual Conference INFO EXPO to reading fellow members' recommendations on social media, I have plenty of opportunities to keep up with tech trends. I've seen many gadgets that would improve the work relationship I have with my library patrons.
Asking me what gadget I'd like to have, though, is like asking a carpenter what tool he'd like to have. With the best tools, he's going to do his best work. But even with a limited toolkit, the carpenter is still going to build a better cabinet than I could even with the best of tools.
Great new gadgets help us do our work better, but we as information professionals are more critical than any gadget.
I'm no tech expert, and I don't need to be. I'm not an early adopter. I learn from the community of professionals around me, and I learn from my library patrons. Any gadget I could write about here would probably be old news to most of you.
I would like a tablet so I could access catalog records while I'm working in the library annex, though. And a stapler that didn't jam would be great.
